Hill Repeats - 2 miles easy, 8 x 1 min. uphill @ 5K effort w/jog-back recoveries, 2 miles easy.

31° F, 85% humidity, winds calm.

Remember two weeks ago when I did hill repeats and I couldn't quite reach a sign that was just beyond where I could get in my 50 sec. repeats? Well, today I had 10 seconds more on each repeat and so I was able to reach the sign. I just reached it on my first 2 repeats, and thereafter I went beyond it, particularly on the last repeat. My paces on the repeats were 7:52, 7:56, 7:39, 7:40, 7:47, 7:38, 7:31, 7:00. I went quite slowly on my warm up and cool down, as well as on my jog-back recoveries, so my average pace for the whole run was only 9:50.

It was cold out this morning. Cars that were parked outside had frost on the windows. However, I was pretty warm by the time I finished my hill repeats.

Nice run in the cold today! What is the difference between hill repeats and hill sprints? Effort and distance? Hill work is something I really need to work on. We were frosty this morning.... but I have resigned my sub 6 post, I'm back to running after work.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 10:34:53 from 24.8.167.243

Lori, the difference between hill sprints and hill repeats are both effort and duration. A hill sprint is of very short duration (8-10 seconds) but of very high (maximal) intensity. A hill repetition is of longer duration (50 seconds - 2 minutes) and has a hard effort, like 5K effort, but not a maximal effort like a hill sprint. Does that answer your question?

I would probably switch to running after work if it worked for me, but there are too many things going on with the kids in the evenings and so mornings are pretty much my only choice.

Good work!

Congrats on the fast times and reaching the stop sign. I can't believe it's already so cold. The temp dropped fast out there.

It's harder running after work, because I have all day to come up with excuses. I'm too tired in the morning to come up with anything other than "sleep" as an excuse.

Nice expliantion Carolyn, I understand now. Running after work only works if you do it without going home first. Once I'm home I don't want to have to leave.

Are you following a training plan these days?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 17:05:44 from 198.241.174.15

Yes, JD. I'm following a half-marathon training plan from Run Faster by Brad Hudson, the same book from which I got the marathon training plan that I used for the Ogden marathon. (I'm willing to end a sentence with a preposition, but not when the end of the sentence is so far from the object of the preposition.)

I'm thinking of going training-plan-less once the current training plan ends.

From JD on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 17:19:54 from 70.96.78.157

Well, Hudson seems to have worked pretty well for you. You had a strong marathon. Maybe I should follow Hudson for my next effort.

Nice work today. We had frost up here in Westminster too. Kinda felt nice on my feet as I ran around the field at the high school.
