General aerobic + speed - 7 miles w/ 8 x 100 m strides.

6:28 am, 57° F, 28% humidity, wind 14 ESE.

I ran later than usual this morning because thing 2 doesn't have to be to school until 8:30 and thing 1 doesn't have to go to school at all since he has graduated now. The only issues were making sure that thing 3 was up on time and then getting thing 4 to the bus at 8:20. So I left on my run after I got thing 3 up and made sure he had everything he needed from me and could get himself to school. I actually wasn't really anxious to run today. I'm kind of burned out. But I feel good now that I've done it.

It was a windy morning. Parts of the run were hard, particularly heading uphill into the wind on Quebec St. I ran about 4 1/2 miles to the high school track, where I did the strides. There was a group of what looked to be middle schoolers gathering at the track but they were hanging out near the long jump pit. There was one guy who must have been there teacher. I wonder if it was a PE class from the middle school doing a final test or something. The middle school is right by the high school so it's conceivable that they would use the high school track. I think it has a better long jump it than the middle school track does. A couple of other runners arrived at the track as I was finishing. The track is oriented north/south, and so all of my odd numbered strides were with the wind at my back and the even numbered strides were into the wind.

Nice run and strides today. You're tapering now (right?) so hopefully that'll help a little with the feelings of burnout.

You're awesome!

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 10:26:34 from 24.199.205.252

congrats on getting to sleep in a little longer!

You've certainly worked hard enough to validate the burned out feeling. I don't know anyone as dedicated as you are.

Our middle school does not have a track. They share with the high school since it's next door. Maybe they were out for the presidental physical fitness testing. I think that includes a long jump if I remember correctly.

Have a great week!

What is up with this wind? At least it isn't as bad as Saturday. You deserve to feel burned out, I would have been burned out long before now following your plan. The late night 17 miles probably is not helping with the Monday morning desire to run. I am glad you got a little extra sleep today!

From Snoqualmie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 11:26:53 from 24.18.192.33

Nice job. I'm feeling more and more excited about going to Newport. I hope you do too. Apart from looking forward to the race, I can't wait to walk on the beach and hear the waves, smell the sea, etc.

From auntieem on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 11:27:55 from 24.18.77.246

A nice run for a burned out day! I don't measure my pace on strides; maybe I should. I just use them as a place to accelerate and finish them off flying. I don't try to bolt in the beginning, just a fast clip and getting faster as I move along. I am not even sure how fast they are supposed to be. Do you start/stop your garmin for each one, or just have the lap timer set for 100m?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 11:32:26 from 24.8.167.243

I hit the lap button as I start and end each stride. I'm just a sucker for data. It's not that I'm trying to hit a certain pace, I just want to know after the fact what I did.

From JD on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 11:50:06 from 70.96.78.157

Good start to the week. Taper time!

From Bonnie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 12:02:38 from 64.119.33.134

Yup, being burnt out means you are right on schedule for a great race!! Yipppee.

If you are on a track, the track itself is actually a more accurate measure of pace than your Garmin for short distances ... using the old fashioned or should I just say "old school" method ;-) of using a stopwatch.

From Bonnie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 12:05:44 from 64.119.33.134

Auntie, I don't think you should pace yourself on strides -- I think you and I are similar and you need to get away from pace and think about effort (which it sounds as though your coach wants you to do?).

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 12:27:41 from 24.199.205.252

to piggy back on this conversation about strides and effort, should they be 100% effort?

From Bonnie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 12:54:55 from 128.196.228.134

Hi QP. No training should be at 100% - save 100% for races. Here is what Greg McMillan says about strides:

"Strides work to improve your sprinting technique by teaching the legs to turn over quickly. It's really the neuromuscular system that we're trying to develop here which is why they are shorter than anaerobic capacity intervals. They last only 50-200m because unlike the anaerobic capacity intervals, we don't want lactic acid to build up during each stride. This inhibits the nervous system and interferes with the neuromuscular adaptations that we want. Accordingly, after each stride, you must jog easily for a minimum of 30 seconds and up to a minute and a half to make sure the muscles are ready for the next one. Not allowing for sufficient recovery after each stride is a common mistake. Take advantage of the longer recovery. It will allow you to put more effort into each stride which really helps develop your speed.

As you might imagine, the pace for strides is very fast - 800m to mile race pace. Note that this is not all-out sprinting. Run fast but always stay under control. These are quick efforts where you practice good form. You'll be amazed at how much your finishing kick improves with these workouts."

From Nevels on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:04:08 from 131.204.15.93

as a side note, i've always looked at striders as a good opportunity to focus on form. i've always approached them as kind of an exaggerated stride (not overstriding/heel striking, think more along the lines of a slow-motion sprinting form) in an effort to lengthen out my stride during the final kick of a race (as opposed to simply increasing stride rate by decreasing length)

and Bonnie (and that Greg McMillan guy... whoever he is...) is spot on with regard to the length and speed of the striders

From Bonnie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:23:12 from 128.196.228.134

Hi Nevels, that is how I use them too, more about form than "speed". Greg is a pretty smart guy (www.mcmillanrunning.com -- if you look through his "running university" link you will see some of the stuff he advocates and has studied - I like him because he is a scientist - well, and a nice guy). He actually has added an ultra guy to his coaching stable, you might know (of) him, Ian Torrance? (http://iantorrence.blogspot.com/)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:30:40 from 198.241.174.15

For what it's worth, I (usually) run my strides fast but in control, not all out, focusing on form. I just track the pace for kicks.

From Nevels on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:33:26 from 131.204.15.93

i am familiar with McMillan; a group with which i run uses some of his stuff on a fairly regular basis, and he's got some pretty good coaching out there (and a couple books, if i'm not mistaken...). i, too, like his scientific approach, which, when coupled with his own first-hand experience (he was an Olympian, right?), makes for an ideal coach.

and yes, i'm familiar with Ian Torrence. he ran the Mt. Mist 50k a few years ago, setting the course record in less than ideal conditions. very solid runner. i've enjoyed following his blog for the past few months with some of the elite shorter distance guys he works with .

The wind is bringing a snow storm...watch out!! I'm SO mad about it!!

Nice work on the strides (I skipped over the comments about them). I can feel your pain on the burn out, it always feels that way as we begin taper. I'm sure by the time you get to the last week, you'll be itching to run and hit that marathon PERFECT!

From Kelli on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 15:12:51 from 71.219.93.114

Rachel beat me to it, I bet the snow is coming your way!!!

Nice job on running even when you were not feeling it. I hear ya on being burnt out, I am there, too. What should we do about it, though? Quit? Take it easy? Take a break? Suffer through it and hope it passes??

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 15:19:02 from 24.8.167.243

There's no snow in our forecast. Just isolated thunderstorms tomorrow and the next day. But I guess we'll see.

Kelli, I think I need a break. I've just got to make it through this marathon and then I'm going to back off of mileage and do some other stuff like weight training or yoga for a while.

From RAD on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 15:23:28 from 67.172.229.125

DON'T LET THEM TRICK YOU! That's what they tried to tell us too - but we woke up this morning to a mid-winter snow storm!! Even on the news last night they were only forecasting snow in the HIGH mountains - foothills were only rain!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 16:08:10 from 24.8.167.243

I'm glad I ran this morning and didn't leave it until this afternoon. It was windy this morning, but now it's MUCH windier. We've got 45 mph winds right now. It's garbage day in my neighborhood and everyone's garbage cans blew over and there's garbage blowing around the neighborhood.

From Kelli on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 16:14:37 from 71.219.93.114

I keep trying to convince myself to take a break, but then I convince myself to save the break for when it is hot and I HATE running. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and i will get a break soon!
