Easy run.

6:53 am, 45° F, 96% humidity, wind 8 SSE.

If I put my Canyonlands Half Marathon time from last March in the McMillan calculator (I use this instead of my recent marathon because the 1/2 time gives me slightly faster paces), it gives me an easy run range of 8:49 to 9:19. That's what I was shooting for this morning. I feel like with all the recovery runs in that last training plan, particularly in the final weeks, I flirted too much with 10:00 pace and I need to get out of that habit and get comfortable running easy a little faster.

I managed to barely eek into the target range on my overall pace by virtue of my first mile being too slow, but I ran the rest of the miles just a little bit too fast. Oops. In any case, the run didn't feel as easy as 10:00 pace, but it wasn't too hard. I made sure that I stayed in a 3:2 breathing pattern (in for 3 steps, out for 2) so that I didn't expend too much effort. And I felt good when I finished, like I could have kept going.

AP: 8:50. Splits: 9:23, 8:47, 8:44, 8:35, 8:45, 0.09 @ 8:41.

In other news, we spent Saturday evening at the urgent care getting this done to my third son:

Sam's head

He was at a friend's birthday party and the friends little brother jumped down the stairs and then told Sam to try it. So Sam did it and bashed his head against the ceiling. Afterwards, the other boy said that he forgot to tell Sam to duck.

The gash was about an inch and a half long, as you can see, and about 1/4 inch deep. After the doctor cleaned it up and showed me before he stapled it, I think I was looking at Sam's skull. He was a big hit at church yesterday. The other kids starting calling him Staples.

Ouch!

Remember to keep your easy runs easy!

You can also use the smartcoach on runnersworld.com to get a pretty good read on paces.

That is AWESOME. I can relate to that injury. I've had a total of 88 stitches in my head, from 5 different accidents. Your son is on my team now!!!

This is the third time he's cracked his head open.

Ouch! Glad your son is okay; nice nickname he has now. And, it must've made for a whale of a distraction at the birthday party!!

Nice speedy miles today. I think I agree with your philosopy about speeding up the easy running miles, at least on days you are feeling good. Go by how you feel, and you're the best judge of that!!

PS: You're smart to focus on a 3:2 breathing pattern!

We took him back to the birthday party after he got the staples. The party had about an hour left. Apparently all the kids took pictures and they're probably all over Facebook by now.

Nice run! So sorry to hear about the major boo-boo. I bet the parents of the house felt just awful. Boys!

That wound looks pretty gnarly, I hope it just looks much worse than it really is, good thing it's not someplace where it shows.

I often start out a lot slower than my easy pace range until I am warmed up. Then I end up going faster in the later miles to make up for it, but by then the faster pace feels easy, even though it is faster than the easy pace on paper. Not sure if I'm doing it correctly, but I hope so.

YIKES! Nice work on the run this morning, and I hope the little one feels better soon.

I think we all get into a rut with our pace, even when we can do more comfortably. It's a good goal to keep up after a full training plan.

From auntieem on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 15:41:07 from 24.18.77.246

The staples are definitely cool!

Just when I was so trying to emulate your nice easy paces, you are tired of them and have moved on! Funny, but my "easy" pace is supposed to be 8:58-9:28 and I run better (better form) and the 8:58 end of easy pace; it is a huge struggle to run "right" any slower.

Don't go too fast, and don't forget to duck!

Gaa! Well, you know what they say - chicks dig scars!

Nice job on the run too!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 13:15:44 from 198.241.217.15

That's not good, Dave. The chicks dig this guy already anyway.

From Nan on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 00:11:19 from 174.51.250.151

Woah. Glad he's okay. At least he got a cool new nick name out of the deal.

I've got a Swingline. Next time bring him to me. I'll fix him up good.
