Marathon Pace run. 1 mile easy, 2 x 4 miles @ MP with 5 min. active recovery, 1 mile easy.

Weather: 51°F, 48% humidity, wind 11.5 S.

This was a good workout. I like workouts where I run faster than easy pace. My pace on the first easy mile was 9:55. Pace on the next 4 miles was 8:19. Pace on the 5 minute recovery was 8:46. Pace on the next 4 miles was 8:05. Pace on the 1 mile cool down was 9:04. Average pace for the whole run was 8:29.

I ran in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt for the first time except for the Canyonlands Half Marathon since last summer.

I have this little embarrassing problem. The places on my body that get sweaty and the way it collects on my shirt, it looks like I'm lactating. Some shirts show it more than others, but it was pretty obvious on the shirt I wore today and I was thinking that that would be a good shirt for the marathon. Maybe I'll have to get a white shirt.

Interesting and slightly funny about the sweating issue. Women have the unfortunate burden of how sweat might look on them. Guys are just gross so any sweat on us is expected and still gross.

And way to be speedy today. You showed up my yesterday run, for sure. Nice work. You are going to do fantastic at Ogden. If I can get away for a few hours I want to come up and cheer everyone on. My cousin is running too, so that is an added bonus for me to go.

That's a nice workout, Carolyn. It is a Hudson workout? Even though I strayed from his plan I do think his workouts are awesome. I hope to do more of them in the coming cycle. How come your MP segments are so different? Just a suggestion, but you might want to try to be really consistent on those so your neuromuscular self "learns" the pace. Or was it a terrain issue?

Great job Carolyn, but I agree with Sno, and I would slow down a little. You really need to work on MP, which is not slow, but not fast either. Not that an 8 min pace is out of your reach at all, but were you planning on that as your MP in the race? In my opinion (and maybe it is just the 7 years extra that I have on my body, well and my fear of injury) this close to the marathon you want to put as little stress on the body as possible.

Yes, that was a Hudson workout. Pretty much everything I do is a Hudson workout since I am following his training plan religiously.

My first MP segment was actually much more difficult than the second MP segment. The first segment had 515 feet of ascent and 295 feet of descent, while the second segment had 255 feet of ascent and 370 feet of descent. Also, the first segment was almost all into the wind, while the second segment had the wind behind me or as a cross wind. I was shooting for 8:15 pace on both segments. On the first one I was pushing to get as close to that as I could. On the second, I was trying to slow myself down so as not to overshoot it by too much, but I still overshot it.

Yup. It is tough to adjust for conditions! Good job.

Ah yes, the hill/wind adjustments. I know them well! :)

I'd say if the shirt was comfortable, wear it. Who cares how you look when you're sweaty? You certainly won't when you're done with the marathon.

Another good run. What's the MP you are shooting for?

Nice workout!

Nice run today!! Way to push the pace! I thini you should wear whatever your comfortable in... like Tracy said I don't think you will really care by the time you finish. My trouble lately has been chaffing. The past three runs have really gotten painful. I hope I can heal and find something to wear that won't make them hurt.

diaper rash ointment/cream (I like the cream though it does get on your clothes) works once you already have chafing ...

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, May 07, 2009 at 12:30:55 from 198.241.217.15

Tracy, when I was in Utah Sasha said that I should run 8:15 pace as long as I can in the marathon and then if I have to slow down a little after that, that's okay. I'm trying to run under 3 hours and 50 minutes, which is 8:47 pace.

A lot of people disagree with the positive split approach that Sasha is advocating, but I'm leaning towards giving it a try. So the pace I'm shooting for on MP runs is 8:15.

Thanks Bonnie :)
