I've been taking it easy this week with sleeping in and running late. It's going to be a rude awakening to have to get back to real life and the dark, cold, early mornings next week.

I got some new shoes for my birthday yesterday. Michelle went shopping with me. I had to lie to the sales punk about what distance I plan to run in them in order to get him to show me racing flats. In any case, I settled on the Brooks Green Silence, which are really red and yellow and look like Ronald McDonald shoes. Here they are:

GreenSilence 002

I ran the first 4 miles in these shoes, and then changed to the VFFs for the last two miles.

I spent today's run thinking about tomorrow's 20 miler. I think the trail is going to be too snowy to run on. So my choices are to run a 20 mile loop on the streets, which would require me essentially to circumnavigate Highlands Ranch and would be very hilly. Or I could do repeats of a smaller loop, like do my 10 mile loop twice, but that would give me that nasty mile 5 hill that kicked my butt yesterday twice. Or I could do my 2 mile loop 10 times, or my 4 mile loop 5 times. I kind of like the idea of the 4 mile loop five times, because it doesn't take so long to do the 4 mile loop, and 5 repeats aren't that many, so it might seem shorter psychologically. And if I did either the 2 mile loop 10 times or the 4 miles loop 5 times, I could set up a little aid station in my front yard and practice drinking from cups on the run and then I wouldn't have to carry my fuel belt. Decisions, decisions.

And just to make things even more fun, it looks like we're due for another snow storm tonight/tomorrow morning. Maybe I'll do 4 mile loops in my yak traks tomorrow. Dang these spring storms that mess up my long runs. This reminds me of last Spring when I ran 20 miles on a 1/12 of a mile indoor track because of snow. I guess this is the risk I take with training for a Spring marathon.

Incidentally, I've decided that I have seasonal allergies, not a head cold, because my snot is clear. Still, I'm kind of a sneezing, drippy mess, especially right after I come in from running.

AP: 10:03. Splits: 10:29, 10:01, 9:47, 9:39, 10:06, 10:18.

I was starting to get into a groove with those new Ronald McDonald shoes, but then I slowed way down in the VFFs. I just don't run fast in the VFFs for some reason. Maybe it's a good thing I switched to them today because this was supposed to be a recovery run, and I was starting to run too fast in the Ronald McDonald shoes.

Sweet new shoes!

Happy Birthday, Carolyn!!!

Tough decisions tomorrow. My suggestion would be to do your 4 mile loop five times. I think alternating directions each time really helps too as it breaks it up a bit.

I hope the weather holds for you and you can get it in without too much resistance.

Love the new shoes. I really want racing flats.

I worked for Ronald for 5 years. He's a great guy. Happy birthday!

I wish images weren't blocked on this computer, because I would love to see those shoes! They sound fabulous.

On two of my four 20 mile runs, I have done my 'hood 4 mile loop 5 times, just like you're thinking about doing.

I found that I really did like the convenience of having my own "aid station" to stop at for fuel, and I knew that the port-a-potty was close by and clean. I don't think I carried water until the last loop when I was really getting tired & thirsty.

I hope the snow that does come isn't a bother for you. It's better to train in the snow than to have your marathon cancelled due to snow. Good luck on your run!

From RAD on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 14:23:23 from 67.172.229.125

ugghhh, as we were getting snow this morning I thought about your Saturday run and if this storm was going to hit you - sorry!!

Nice speed in those new racing flats! So, did you have to tell him you were running more or less miles? That's really interesting to me - if someone wants a certain pair of shoes, sell 'em!?!

I'll put in my vote for 5 -4 mile loops with aid station at home. If the storm is anything like it's hit here it's big snowflakes one minute and sunshine the next. You may want to be close to home for adding/shedding layers and yak trax.

Awesome shoes! Happy birthday too! I hope all your kidlets were nice and sweet :) I'd vote for the 5-4mile loops for the same reasons as RAD. Good luck tomorrow!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 16:47:28 from 24.8.167.243

RAD, I had to tell them that I'm running shorter distances than I'm actually running. They think that old ladies like me need big honking motion-control stability shoes for a marathon for some reason. They would never even show me racing flats if I didn't ask for them specifically.

From Tracy on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 19:21:28 from 173.23.75.96

Happy birthday. Snazzy shoes too!

I would vote also for 4 miles 5 times. That would work better for me psychologically.

And you're not an old lady.

From JD on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 20:59:32 from 209.183.51.132

I love the design/color of those shoes. Ironic they're called Silent Green. Buying shoes online saves you money and from having to deal with sales punks.

Have a great long run tomorrow!

From april27 on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 21:57:07 from 99.188.251.180

Isn't it awful that you need to lie to the sales guy to get what you want? yeesh!

Why didn't you name them ronald mcdonald shoes in your shoe log?

From CookieLegs on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 22:13:44 from 71.32.232.151

Happy Birthday! And what fun getting the new shoes! And you're definitely not old! (I, on the other hand, am a stick in the mud 55 year old who always buys the same type of stability shoe!!).

I vote for the 5x4 mile loop, or the 2x10 loop. Hope the miles pass quickly for you, whichever route you choose, and that the weather cooperates.

From Smooth on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 23:36:55 from 174.23.198.220

HaPpY bIrThDaY!!! Those Ronnie shoes are snazzy! I have often wondered about racing flats. I want to get the Mizuno Elixer and try them out on the track. Last time I tried those on when the Mizuno sales rep came to the running store. They discouraged me from buying them. They wouldn't believe me if I lied anyway, because I AM an old lady and I have moderate pronation. Enough about me!

I'm always so impressed with how you stick to the pace your training run calls for. I run my recovery runs too fast and therefore can't run the pace I need to for the other key workouts. You are such an intelligent runner. GOOD LUCK with your 20 miler tomorrow. Sorry about this storm heading your way. Hopefully it blows over thru the night and it will be better condition for you. The 4 mile loop sounds good to me especially if you reverse directions! ENJOY!

From Nan on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 12:52:08 from 174.51.250.151

Awesome shoes!! They should seek endorsement from McD's and subsidize their costs.

I'm glad the snow didn't really materialize and I had a nice sunny run this morning. I assume you didn't get any down south either?

OH, and you are NOT an old lady even if you did just have a birthday. Runners don't age, silly. Glad the salesman finally gave you what you were asking for. :)
