Long run with a fast finish, just because I wanted to be done.

6:53 am, 33-40°, 79-53% humidity, winds 12 NNW, gusting to 20.

Well, we didn't get a big snow storm like I was afraid we would. It tried to snow a little bit last night, but never amounted to anything. So the only issue this morning was the cold and the wind. The cold actually wasn't too bad except when I was going into the wind. The wind got a little worse during the course of the run.

The voting yesterday was unanimous in favor of my running the 4 mile loop 5 times, so that's what I did. Michelle ran to my house and then ran my second loop and then she ran back home. It was nice to have company for part of the run. In accordance with jun's recommendation yesterday, I alternated directions. I normally run this route clockwise, but today I ran the 1st, 3rd, and 5th loops counter-clockwise and the 2nd and 4th loops clockwise.

I came in my house for a bathroom break and some water after the second loop, and then I stopped again after the third loop and had about half of an apple pie flavored hammer gel and some water.

There's nothing really exciting to report about this run. I'm just glad it's over.

AP: 9:17. Splits: 9:34, 9:32, 9;16, 9:17, 10:01, 9:50, 9;51, 9:46, 9:09, 9:09, 9:08, 9:04, 9:00, 9:08, 9:06, 9:04, 9;12, 9:09, 9:07, 8:21.

I'm calling that last mile a fast mile because it's below my arbitrary designation of anything below 8:30 as fast.

Nice! Glad the stars aligned so that you could get in a good, solid long run. And nice pace on the last mile :)

Ahhh ... the first 20 miler in the build-up over and done with! Yea. Great job! I would do the 4 x 5 loop too, though I prefer something like a 3 x 7 ;-).

From Smooth on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 13:25:20 from 174.23.198.220

NICELY DONE Carolyn! Your loop 3,4,5 are faster and consistent pace. If that's your comfortable long distance pace. You should be able to hit mp sub-8mm. GOOD JOB! Nice to get the first 20 miler in the book!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 13:54:24 from 24.8.167.243

Thanks. The first 20 miler was actually supposed to be last Saturday, but I did that half-marathon instead.

From Michelle on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 14:56:46 from 71.218.114.99

It is true, your pace picked up after your slow friend left! I am glad you were able to run outside alright instead of doing a ton of laps inside. Did you see the women again that you past in your first two laps?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 15:20:58 from 24.8.167.243

No, I didn't see her again, Michelle. Thanks for running with me.

Nice job Carolyn! You did hit some nice paces in there - especially for a 20 miler. And cranking out an 8:21 at the end? WOW! I'm glad the storm fizzled and didn't give you moisture issues - just cold, which I don't think we're getting out of anytime soon :(

Great job on your long run!! Nice quick miles at the end, too!! Had to laugh when I read that you ate "about half of an apple pie", then I kept reading and realized you were talking about a gel! :)

Again, awesome job with the wind and all, and high mileage this week!

From marion on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 18:12:43 from 71.213.120.94

very nice run! I like the creative loops around home. It's nice to use our own potties :) It's also nice to not have to carry all the gear...and drop sweatshirts, pick them back up... you know all the cool stuff like that :) I thought for a moment that you actually had apple pie. Now that is my kind of running aid :D

From JD on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 19:17:48 from 70.96.78.157

Nice long run. I like your designation of fast being anything under 8:30. That is a fast mile to end a 20 miler with!

From JD on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 19:18:12 from 70.96.78.157

Oh, and I just noticed your headline. Funny!

From Snoqualmie on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 20:56:13 from 24.18.192.33

Great job on the long run. You had good luck with no snow!

Nice job, Carolyn! I'm glad you didn't get any snow...

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 12:05:30 from 24.199.205.252

Wow! Really nice paces on such a long run.

The counter clockwise trick seems to help me break up the run & I like doing it on my runs.

Love the push at the end. I've felt like I've wanted to just hurry and speed up to finish my long runs, but the fastest I can do I usually pretty slow.

From Mark on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 23:21:51 from 173.168.88.68

Great job on a solid 20 miler. I was reading the entry, and the way the lines were broken up, I read "had about half an apple pie" before I could read the next line that had the rest of the sentence, so I was pretty impressed that you could down half an apple pie and still finish your run!
