slow today.  Avg pace was 9:23, but my effort was much more.  I couldn't figure out why I was so sluggish and running was so difficult.  Then around mile four, I remembered that I'd donated blood yesterday and I thought maybe that's why.

It almost felt like I was trying to run in SLC....just strange.  Maybe it was all the ice cream too......naaahhhh.

Still having trouble with my energy & focus level.  Is there some rule about how long it takes to recover from donating blood?  Maybe I should have waited to run...I'm just not sure.

There was a discussion about donating blood on CookieLeg's (adele.fastrunningblog.com) a week or so ago. If I remember write, the conclusion was that donating blood makes it hard to run for a few days at least.

I don't think that 9:23 is so slow. I was slower than that today.

I think the reason for the sluggish feeling and lower energy level due to giving blood is less blood to carry oxygen through your system so you will prolly have that feeling (like you are running at altitude ) and not much strength but thats my thoughts. sometimes it takes a week or so to get back to normal from my experience so keep after it and have a great day...p

Thanks Carolyn. The blog link was helpful. Perhaps the body does regenerate within 24 hours, but maybe it's not as enriched right away (if that's the right word to use).

I think I'll have some red meat for dinner with a spinach salad. That and keeping my expectations lower this weekend.

Many days a 9:23 pace is good for me, but I was putting out the effort for something a lot faster, so I guess it was frustrating for me. I'd started with a 9:00 goal, and realized I wasn't going to make it.... just my own little pitty party. I'll make hats and serve ice cream later. (fresh ice cream, mind you).

You stopped and visited the local vampire... I haven't done that in a few years; the last time I passed out and I haven't donated since then!

KP- hard to imagine you passing out. You fight off wild dogs, run rapist loops, and have near death experiences with 18 wheelers.

priman- your explaination makes sense. Thanks!!

yeah, I'm in agreement with the 'vampire' discussion. It'll probably take a few good days to recover and feel back to normal. I CAN however empathize with the "I feel like I'm running a 7:30 and the garmin only says 9:30!" I feel like that every morning :) So...does that mean I can come to the pity party?

Sorry you were dragging today. My husband gave blood yesterday and he said his run was a little tougher today as well. I hope you feel less sluggish tomorrow.
