Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

At the gym. It's sweaty there. I watched Grey's Anatomy on my phone because I'm really into that right now even though I've already watched all of the episodes. 9:05/mile, 1% incline for the first 3 and 2% for the last 2.

I miss my Altras. They feel a lot better on my feet. But I'm afraid to wear them because they were what I was wearing when my knees were hurting. I'll totally take blisters instead of knee pain.

Also I've been noticing from the pictures of the Wedding Bells 5k that my legs don't kick up like the legs of the faster runners. If I ever think about what my legs are doing I just try to think about being relaxed and easy, and it looks like this makes them stay pretty low. If I try to have more range of motion will I go faster? Or will I have more range of motion if I get faster?

I'm not really trying to get faster right now, though. Right now I just want to run a little bit more than I did last week and take care of all the other stuff I'm supposed to be taking care of.

i think you have fine form, and i also think that your safest bet is to run with the form that comes naturally and feels the most comfortable to you. this is not to say that one can't change their form to be faster/more efficient/lighter on their feet/whatever...but in my opinion it's a pretty delicate thing to mess with, and deliberately trying to run in a way that doesn't feel natural to you could very well lead to injury. also, the faster the pace, the bigger the kickback -- a lot of those guys were basically sprinting (and this is not to say you weren't going fast! it's just that it's all relative) :)

anyway, i think something that may help improve (or at least train) the leg kick/range of motion naturally over time is adding in some speed workouts...especially short, fast repeats like 200s or 400s. you will inevitably pick up your legs more with the faster turnover.
