I knew today was going to be the last day I ran in my Mizuno Wave Inspire 4 Silver/Old Gold/Phantom shoes.  That's why I ran so slow.  So that I could spend as much time as possible with them.  Either that or it was the 99° heat.

I saw a very athletic looking young colored fellow being led to the park by his parents to run wind sprints up the retention basin hill.  How cool is that?  Parents investing in their kid's future.  Good for them.

I also realized 'they" have put in a drinking fountain next to the newly constructed bench.  Nice.

Time - 27:38 (avg. pace 9:10)

Splits - 9:10, 9:12, 9:06

Temp - 99°

"colored fellow"?

Seriously?

A. why does it matter what color he is?

B. I'm pretty sure that term became extremely taboo about 30 years ago.

Jeez, I'm not even a minority and I'm offended.

From Scott Wesemann on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 13:15:51 from 66.239.250.209

Burt- What is this 1955?

I thought I read that wrong.

From Burt on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 13:26:33 from 206.19.214.144

Jun and Scott - I'm sorry. It's just that there aren't very many darkies here in AZ. I'm not sure what to call them.

From jun on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 13:31:35 from 205.158.160.209

How about don't call them anything. Why not just say "I saw a child's parents taking him to the park to run hill sprints. It's nice to see parents investing in their kid's future."

Why does the fact that he is a minority have anything to do with what you saw? And if, for any reason (which I can't fathom you would need to) point out that he is Black, just call him 'black'. I'm pretty sure that is the accepted term, at least amongst the many black people I know, including the one my son is named after.

From Burt on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 13:37:51 from 206.19.214.144

That's not what we do in AZ. We vote no against Martin Luther King day and we vote yes to kicking people that look like illegal immigrants out of the country. You wouldn't understand.

From jun on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 13:41:11 from 205.158.160.209

Wow.

From Burt on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 14:02:40 from 206.19.214.144

Oh Jun, quit being such a champion of justice. If by chance I really did offend you, and I'm getting the impression I did, you are going to have to call me out on all the times I've mentioned Mexicans, Asians, Native Americans, old people, and any other "minority" on my blog. You are also going to have to call out everybody that mentions Kenyans in their race reports. Why call them Kenyans? Aren't they all just runners like the rest of us? Don't be offended by the guy you know made the comment on purpose to get a reaction out of someone. It's also funny that only the "majority" gets offended.

From jun on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 14:16:51 from 205.158.160.209

Well, I've never mentioned anything before because I've never seen the other comments before. And in those settings I'm guessing you had chosen not to use such an obviously offensive term (even if the 'off-color' comment was meant to be funny). Normally I find your posts quirky and slightly humorous and even in this case I would pretty much have just overlooked your poor attempt at humor had you responded any differently then you had(specifically, the 'darkie' comment). I'm an extremely tolerant person, but even I have lines.

I don't read your blog very often, mostly because I just don't see when you post, but now I just have a good reason to not read it, at all.

From Rye on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 14:21:33 from 71.209.52.51

Not sure if I want to comment here... on a lighter side..... way to slug out those 3 miles and have an even 800 miles on those shoes. Are you going to get them bronzed?

From Calvin on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 14:23:29 from 209.23.216.3

Hey Burt you may want to cut your losses and start over. If it was an attempt at humor it fell way flat. If it was looking for a reaction, i think you're on your way to getting more than you want.

From Burt on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 14:32:57 from 206.19.214.144

First of all Jun, I apologize to you. But I don't think colored fellow is offensive. It's a reference to one of my favorite movies Oh Brother Where Art Thou. That's a dang funny movie. Sorry you're offended.

Rye - If I can find a way to get the stink out of them, maybe I will. When I retired my black (is that ok to say?) and pink shoes from high school I hung them from my cieling.

Calvin - There's no losses to be cut, but point taken.

From julieesplin on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 19:40:05 from 75.169.177.84

I wasn't offended, but I rarely am.

People of certain races are statistically more likely than others to have a two parent home, education/money, and thus time to invest in kids, etc.

I thought the comment on his race enhanced the point you were try to make. But what do I know, I'm an accountant.

I'm glad "they" put in a drinking fountain for you. Can your stomach even hold enough water to compensate for all the sweat you put out?

From Burt on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 19:59:03 from 206.19.214.144

Julie - you've seen my gut. You know I have plenty of room.

From ACorn on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 01:32:47 from 24.2.76.146

You're a funny dude Burt. I also enjoyed O Brother Where Art Thou. I'm surprised your shoes last that long in the heat haha.

From Burt on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 12:53:39 from 206.19.214.144

Acorn - You'd be doubly surprised if I told you how fat I was. LOL!

From CookieLegs on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 13:10:53 from 70.56.103.173

I hope that kid running wind sprints uphill in 99 degree heat ends up in the Olympics in a few years! That's a lot of determination!

From Lily on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 13:15:20 from 67.199.178.210

Oooo what did I just walk into on this thread?

From Burt on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 13:42:20 from 206.19.214.144

Cookie - That's what I'm thinking. Or maybe the NFL. He had a Mesa Jackrabbits football shirt on.

Lily - Let's just say that if a guy with a Down Syndrome child (me) can forgive someone who used the word retarded on their blog (somebody else), then hopefully I'll be forgiven for saying colored fellow.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 16:48:05 from 75.244.159.157

So, how about those Coen brothers? You have great taste in movies Burt!

From Burt on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 17:06:32 from 206.19.214.144

Don't get me started on that movie. Chad Robinson and I already hijacked Merri's blog a couple of weeks ago on it.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 17:13:56 from 75.244.159.157

Go ahead, get started, I just put on some old timey background music for you...

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 17:19:12 from 152.26.59.252

I always offend people and walk around with my foot in my mouth. It's a good thing I found that extra shoe in the road today because I swallowed the last one.

I think your speed's not to shabby for the heat.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 20:41:54 from 74.196.65.182
