Well, it's nice to know I can still run 10 miles.  I can't do it fast, but I can do it.  Glen the Gazelle and I drove together to the race this morning.  I really enjoy his company.  There were a lot of familiar faces.  Which means a lot of fast faces.  I knew I was not in race shape, so I told Glen that I was not going to get caught up in the heat of the moment and try to run fast, and that he should go do what he do.  (I love talking like that.) He beat me by almost 20 minutes.

Since I'm still waiting on a replacement handle for my Garmin I remembered the time Glen told me about how he downloaded a free app called Endomondo for his smart phone that works like Garmin.  So I downloaded it before the race.  Luckily I had my new shorty shorts (there not that short) with the zippers on the pockets.  I had my truck keys in one pocket and my phone in the other.  At times during the race I could hear my pocket talking to me, but I couldn't tell what it was saying.  At the 8 mile marker I pulled my phone out, and it said 8.25 miles.  Hmmm...piece of junk!

I was running with a group for a while, but they slowly pulled ahead of me.  In my mind I thought, "No problem.  We're all running slow.  I'll throw in a 6:30 last mile and pass them all!"  But my legs did not agree with my wild imaginations.

The course was out and back.  We had to cross the street  right before mile 4.  That's when I saw the leaders coming back.  Holy cow!  That means they were already more than two miles ahead of me.  Then I started counting people.  Glen was in 36th place and looking good.  At the turn around I was in 59th place.  But I got passed twice on the way back.  I hit the wall at 7.5 miles.  How sad is that?  I hit the wall in a 10 mile race?  That's what a steady diet of holiday chocolate will do for you.

At mile 8 there was a bag lady pushing a grocery cart.  When I passed her, she said that we were all insecure.  Then when the lady behind me caught up to me, she told me the bag lady said to her that she better be careful because I was looking to punch someone.  So, I did punch her after the race.  Right in the knuckles.  At some point Endomondo stopped working.  Hard to say when because it wasn't recording the distance very accurately.  Oh, and there were a lot of bridges that we had to run under.  Every time we did I would hear people's Garmins going crazy.  But you would think if I lost satellite reception that it would measure it short.  Right?  Anyway, I'm not sure on my exact time, but it was in the general ball park of 1:33.

Happy New Year everyone!

Good job Burt, looks like you had a great time as usual. Have a very prosperous 2012.

From Burt on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 20:25:38 from 72.223.93.131

You know it Flat. Great job on running 4 times more than me this year.

From LymanW on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 21:23:26 from 75.169.102.158

Nice race. BTW, the bag lady is obviously right (the insecure part not the punching - or maybe she is right about that too). Happy New Year.

Ever seen the crazy cat lady on the Simpson's? That was her, without the cats.

From Kelli on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 22:31:49 from 71.219.66.129

CRAZY lady! But, I do believe you were looking to punch someone!

Nice job on the race. And have a great New Years. I think next year you should beat Flat on his miles. ;o)

From ben on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 23:15:39 from 4.228.243.237

Happy New Year!! I hope next year will bring much success and happiness for you and your family! Come to st george for a race, we can put you up for a night or two. :)

From RAD on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 05:21:44 from 98.202.23.178

Maybe you just have a 'I need to punch someone' look on your face when you run? :)

Nice work getting out there and getting it done today Burty! Always good to hit that wall - whenever it may come.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 12:47:34 from 74.195.74.62

Great job Burt. Now we know that you can count to 59, run 10 miles, and aren't scared of crazy bag ladies. Have a great 2012!

From Claudio on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 15:08:10 from 67.234.206.173

Good job bandido Burt! I wish you a great 2012!!

From Burt on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 21:10:20 from 72.223.93.131

Kelli - the only way I'll beat Flat on his miles is if I punch him in the ankle. But I'm not gonna do that. I kinda like him.

Ben - thanks. I hear you have an extra room available for the next couple of years :)

RAD - Always good to hit the wall? You're strange. :)

Joe - Surprising, huh? Just when you thought you knew me.

Claudio - Same to you. And maybe you can fill us in on the translation of bandido.

Burt,

Nice run/race. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Thanks PRE!

In his ankle, huh? Very menacing.

From ACorn on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 01:01:38 from 24.2.76.146

Nice run Burt! Happy New Year!

From Bonnie on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 14:15:53 from 150.135.114.152

Ha ... as usual, you can make any run/race interesting Burt ... you should be nice to bag ladies, you never know when you might need to borrow a bag or something.

Happy New Year!! Hopefully this will be the year I get to see you again -- I will probably come up there for the Fountain 15K, and Jake and Andrea will be there (hopefully JA too?) so we will have to have a FRB lunch!

From Burt on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 14:42:14 from 72.223.93.131

ACorn - usually you say something funny. I know why you didn't this time. You feel sorry for me for being so slow.

Bonnie - borrow a bag. Funny. Thanks for not feeling sorry for me. Jake and Andrea were also planning on coming down on Valentine's Day. We should do a group run then, too.

From Jake K on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 15:46:48 from 155.100.226.54

Nice race Burt! Way to show that bag lady who is boss!

From Claudio on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 19:53:14 from 74.103.99.118

the translation of bandido? something like a bandit, just with a final -o... correcto?

From MichelleL on Sun, Jan 08, 2012 at 07:59:32 from 42.98.205.62

Bonnie, I thought you were the type who saved your bags to reuse :P Burt, way to show the eye of the tiger. The shorty shorts are the first step. The next step is to not run with keys in your pocket, takes of 1 min/mile.

From Burt on Sun, Jan 08, 2012 at 15:04:10 from 72.223.93.131

Jake - in these tough economic times, the bag lady may be MY boss soon.

Claudio - correcto.

Michelle - third step, spandex?

From MichelleL on Sun, Jan 08, 2012 at 18:08:23 from 42.98.205.62

Third step is to improve your run/blog ratio to at least 1.0. Spandex is a distant fourth.

From baldnspicy on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 16:48:13 from 72.63.175.35

Nicely done, Burt. Just remember, "spandex is a privilege, not a right."... I think I said that right. Anyways, way to start off the new year right!
