2011 Dayton's Dash (3.11 Miles) 00:22:20, Place overall: 8
Total Distance
4.46
My friend Gabe told me about this race. The Deacon's Quorum president in his ward organized this race as a fund raiser for cerebral palsy for his Boy Scout's Eagle project.
This is Gabe.
He sent me the link on Facebook, and I sent it out to all my local running friends. My friend Julie from my last Ragnar team came. This is she.
I wasn't sure how to run this race. Would there be fast people there? Should we run faster than Spencer and Dayton? I decided I would run hard and see what everyone else was doing.
They counted us down from 10, and as I expected some people shot right out. I wasn't near the front when the race started so I went with the flow and watched a bunch of people in front of me. I settled in to a nice 7 min. mile pace which felt extremely easy, but I knew it was the pace I wanted. I trusted that everyone in front of me would tire out.
The course followed the parking lot road then turned right at the street. The street dead ended into a cul-de-sac bulb so I could count how many people were in front of me. 29 after 0.3 miles. I told myself just to keep running my race. Then we got onto a dirt trail. I kept passing people here and there. Spencer and Dayton were ahead of me.
There was a water station at the turn around point. I wasn't sure where to turn around, but I didn't need any water. About a dozen people in front of me stopped to get a drink. This is where Spencer stopped and had an adult take over. Spencer needed to be at the finish line when everyone came in, after all, it was his Eagle project. So I passed Dayton up shortly before getting back on the road again. At this point I could tell that I was in 9th place. I ended up passing three more people, but also got passed twice. I was even chicked by two guys. (Somehow, that last sentence makes perfect sense to me.)
My splits were 7:06, 7:09, 7:23, and 0:42 (6:36 pace). I'm okay with that. I wish I was getting faster, but I haven't been doing any core or cardio work lately. That, I found, is what really helps with my speed.
So, I talked with Julie and her sister a bit after the race. Then I went out to find Gabe who was running with his son. I saw them walking in. His son was tired out. 3.1 miles is a long way for a 7 year old. (I think he's 7. Maybe 6.) So Gabe kept trying to get him to run. We got him going for a little bit. Then he stopped again. We were so close to the finish. So I leaned down and whispered in his ear that if he beat his dad, I would give him 2 quarters. Then he ran all the way to the finish.
I talked to Spencer after the race and congratulated him on the great project. He's a nice kid.
I also got to see Dayton. He wasn't too thrilled about being up so early in the morning, but I'm guessing he enjoyed himself. Fun race.

Nice job Burt! It is nice doing a race for a cause that matters. 7:11 pace per mile (not bad).

Good work Burt! And not a bloody nipple in sight
From Burt on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 14:17:27 from 72.223.90.79
Chad - Thanks! Some day I'll run below a 7 minute pace for an entire 5k.
Chris - Do you mean bloody as in the red liquid that courses through our veins or the English meaning?
From ChrisM on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 14:45:55 from 82.26.207.83
I will leave that up to the reader

Kim - thanks. Great job on your race today, too. I commented on your race 27 seconds after you commented on mine. :)

Looks like a fun time. To be chicked by two guys? They might not like that description. So regarding your blog profile pic, that looks like the not quite all there brother on Arrested Development, is that the personae you are going for?

Dang, Burt!!! You are pretty dang fast even with all that extra weight. Just think how fast you and I could be if we could shed 30 or 40 lbs. That race was for a good cause. One of my co-workers has Cerebral Palsy. I sit next to her and late at night she sings while she listens to her ipod and even though it sounds horrible, it always relaxes me and makes me feel like falling asleep. I told her that and she laughed pretty hard.

Sounds super fun and doing good at the same time! I think your pace was really good.

Michelle - you nailed it. That's Buster Bluth. Rattletrap thinks I look exactly like him, so I put his picture up.
Dale - We need to get out of the Clydesdale division and dust our feet off on it.
Julie - Every time I do a 5k I tell myself, I should have run faster that last mile. But I think I'm giving it my best effort. I don't know. I'm probably stuck in my comfort zone.

That's a great idea for an Eagle Project! I'm going to have to remember that when my boys need to do theirs.
Oh, and good job on the race. I always slow down at the end of 5k's and 10k's too,...and now that I'm thinking of it 1/2 Marathons and Marathons, and let's see...I guess there isn't really anything else I've done.

Nice run Burt! a 7:11 pace is pretty impressive to some of us snails! What a neat idea for a project and a great cause to support as well. Glad you had a great time!
From Burt on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 19:58:49 from 72.223.90.79
Julie - Me too. But it could be mental. I know I can run a mile in the low 6's. I just need to try it some time. I think I'm afraid I'll tucker out and people will see me and laugh at me.
RAD - why do you insist that I'm faster than you?

Congratulations! What a story and you told it extremely well. Thanks for all the details on how you ran your race- you ran smart. It looks like a beautiful race and I'm sure it meant a lot to everyone involved.
From Burt on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 21:01:01 from 72.223.90.79
Scott - pics are the best! and Ramses ees da best!
Beth Lee :) - I wonder how much money they made. It was a free race, but you could donate money if you wanted. And they had a lot of sponsors that helped. But anyway, there was a lot of support.

Nice race, and cool report Burt. Getting chicked by guys is the worst.
Are you sure cardio makes you faster though? I thought it was done by eating a bunch of raw eggs, ala Rocky, but I've been wrong before.
From Burt on Sun, May 15, 2011 at 00:00:05 from 72.223.90.79
Thanks Claudio!
Joe - I'm in denial that I actually got beat by girls. Eating raw eggs makes you run faster to the bathroom.

"Chicked by two guys." You got me laughing on that one, Burt. Good job on the race.

Steve - I'm so embarrassed. Girls aren't supposed to beat me in small races like this!
Merri - at first I thought that said Burrito.
Mark - thanks. I knew you'd like it.

Wow, small world. Just last night I was at a fireside where a short video was shown of Spencer (I think it was Spencer) taking Dayton on a triathlon. Very inspirational.
