There was no way I wasn't going to get a run in today.  But I was too lazy this morning.  I've been planning a luncheon with my old boss for a couple of months ever since we saw each other at our friend's funeral.  My so called BFF Brad picked me up.  We went to Red Robin.  It was great seeing the my coworkers again.  Those were the good old days.  Did you know Red Robin has bottomless root beer floats?  Well, I do.  And everyone kept daring me to get another one.  I put down three along with a Royal Red Robin Burger.

After lunch I came home, applied for a job, and played on the computer.  Before I knew it, it was late.  I changed into my running clothes.  I was waiting for my wife to come home from her "special time."  I could hear a cop helicopter over head.  Now I wondered if I would be able to run at all.  My wife finally got home at 11pm.  I  thought I would have time to run 4.6 miles.  I didn't want to be out after midnight lest I turn into a pumpkin.

I stepped outside, and the thermometer showed 90°.  There was a bit of a breeze.  Good thing I had a long sleeve shirt on.  I started running west towards Lindsay.  I wondered if I would suffer a massive heart attack based off my Royal lunch experience.  It was quiet.  Too quiet.  Where were all the cop cars my wife had just seen?  When would I get hit in the back by a baseball bat from an moving vehicle?  Any minute now I'm sure.  Come on Burt.  Don't psyche yourself out.  I was able to take my mind off my worries when I saw a tall guy out walking a big ol' bulldog.  As I approached them I yelled out, "On your left."  The gentleman moved to the side, but I don't think the dog spoke English.  When I passed it, I completely spooked it.  It took off in a straight line and was forced in a circle around the tall guy holding its leash.  He just laughed.  I thought it was funny, too and was feeling pretty good for spooking the mean dog.  Then I heard the paw steps coming up fast behind me.

Remember that time I said there was a bit of a breeze out?  Well, it wasn't paw steps.  It was leaves.  Leaves being blown in the breeze.  Now I wasn't feeling pretty good about myself and was back to waiting for the inevitable Thirstbuster to be thrown between my legs.  So to distract myself, I started doing the math to figure out if I could really make it home before midnight.  It seemed like it would be close.  I decided to cut a half mile off by coming up 32nd Street.  When I got to 32nd Street I looked at the time and said, "Let's go for it.  Up yours 32nd Street!"  I started to pick up the pace.  However, I knew that I had some uphill to do, it was hot out, and I was in serious jeopardy of suffering a myocardial infarction.  If I could just make it to Pueblo by 11:57pm, I might just make it.  There would be no magic water fountain this time.  I saw 11:55 on the clock and Pueblo was still a ways off.  I picked it up a little more and got to Pueblo.  11:57.  Okay, now I just have to hold an 8 min. pace.  Go Burt!  Do not cut through the park!  You might slip on the grass, get knocked out, and the vagrant will have his way with you.  Now I was really running.  Garmin shows my best time through here was a 5:40 pace.  I made it home at 11:59pm.  Woo hoo!  Still alive, no grapefruits to the chest, and virtue intact.  What a day.

Glad you made it home before curfew! Running sub 8 minute miles after 3 rootbeer floats is a feat of epic proportions. I tip my hat to you.

From Burt on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 16:05:37 from 72.223.91.148

We should make a race out of it.

From The Quiet Pirate on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 16:17:47 from 65.191.243.172

Loved reading your blogs from the week. Good to have you back amusing me :-)

I DID know that Red Robin has bottomless french fries, but I DID NOT know about the root beer floats. I'll never beat you in a race, but I just might be able to beat you at the Red Robin Marathon of burgers, fries & root beer floats. I'll start training soon!

It's on QP!

Great story! Nothing like fear to spark a good workout. Thanks for the heads-up at Red Robin; I was just there and now I feel cheated that I just ordered Coke.

I usually just throw water balloons at runners at night but you've given me some great ideas.

Joe - my sister-in-law got nailed by a grapefruit from on on-coming car. I had a Thirstbuster thrown at me, and it went right through my legs in mid-stride. I should've bought a lottery ticket that day. (Also I used a lot of hyphens there.)

Great race report Burt!

From Burt on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 23:03:38 from 72.223.91.148

LOL! I should make it official mark it as a race report. In your face Father Time!

Welcome to the runners of the night club. I tend to have a lot less drama/action on my runs though. Hey, you nearly go 20 in for the week. Nice job.

From Burt on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 23:33:09 from 72.223.91.148

Not quite 20. I thought I'd have all this time to run no that I don't have a job. But I'm busier now than I was before!

From april27 on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 08:05:44 from 99.188.251.180

Nothing like some internal paranoia to get the legs moving at 11 at night! Glad you made it back before you turned into a pumpkin.

When I was unemployed I had sooo much to do. Basically I think I was doing all the things I wanted/needed to do when I was working but didn't have the time. Like dusting off those pesky ceiling fans. Now that I will have winter breaks and summers off my ceiling fans will never get dirty. hahah

From ChrisM on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 16:53:57 from 86.10.81.85

I wonder how many root beer floats it is possible to drink and still run sub 8:00 pace

From Burt on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 17:09:23 from 68.14.209.26

April - We don't have ceiling fans in AZ because it's so cool year round.

Chris - It's like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop? The world may never know.

Bottomless rootbeer floats? Really!?

From Burt on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 17:24:06 from 68.14.209.26

Check it out my friends.

The float is on the menu twice, just in case you miss it the first time.

Epic run Burt, epic!

Oh, and I wouldn't challenge QP to the contest...unless you like to lose. Us Dekker girls have some amazing eating power - seriously!

From Merri on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 18:57:06 from 160.7.252.148

not enough detail.

From Rye on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 23:33:11 from 75.174.14.230

I'm thinking that eastern Idaho is a good place to live. You guys scare me!

From Burt on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 11:29:42 from 72.223.91.148

RAD - You gals are that good, huh? Then maybe that's what I need to push myself to the next plateau.

Merri - your blog has been seriously lacking detail lately. Today's entry was a little better, but it may be time for another round of jibjab.

Rye - West side! Wait, I said that wrong. West say-yeed!

From RAD on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 11:39:46 from 76.27.16.189

Burt, yeah. Our running may not impress too many people, but our eating - well, we were taught by the best. No full switch (it's been repressed in the genes through several generations) and we know how to fit it all in. Trust me, you don't want to mess with us as far as eating goes. Why do you think we all have to run so much? We run to support our eating habits!

What a night!

Burt - I'm commenting on your post from over two weeks ago when you wrote, "I don't think the dog spoke English." As I read that I laughed out loud and my 5 year old daughter asked what I was laughing about. When I told her she thought it was incredibly funny. So funny in fact that she told her brothers and her dad about it and reminded me of it every day for about a week. Every time she talked about it she couldn't help but laugh. It was so cute. I just thought you might like to know.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 10, 2011 at 16:38:12 from 68.14.209.26

That's awesome! People, let this be a lesson to you. Teach your dogs English!

From ChrisM on Mon, Oct 10, 2011 at 16:51:52 from 86.10.81.85

You should also teach your dogs music, they like to listen to Bach.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 10, 2011 at 16:55:11 from 68.14.209.26

No, they like Bark, not Bach.

From ChrisM on Mon, Oct 10, 2011 at 17:11:10 from 86.10.81.85

Provided the Bark is not too RRough
