I've decided to give my achilles a chance to heal. It has been hurting off and on for a month, and I'm tired of doing very slow runs, which may be helping me keep my mileage up, but don't seem to be helpig me get over this achilles problem. I'll try and do some cross-training like activities for the next week or two. I was going to go bicycling this morning, although I didn't. It's a little harder to motivate myself to ride a bicycle when it's dark outside and below freezing. I'll have to work on that. I'm still doing calf exercises to improve their strength and hopefully avoid future achilles problems.

Hang in there. I hate injuries. They're such a pain in the ... wherever they are!

Good call on taking time off. Give it couple of weeks and try running again. I did that last spring, and it worked. I did elliptical/stationary bike in the gym. Also, when you start back, try to avoid the hills. If you live in the hilly area, drive to where it's flat, and run there. Good luck!

Bryan,

I've been having achilles problems off and on for several months. In some reading that I did, I pinpointed the injury as achilles tendenosis, not tendonitis. Big difference, tendonitis has swelling associated with it. Mine didn't. Just pain at the attach point to my heel. Anyway, the fix that I read about was to put a mild lift in the heel of your shoes, no hill work, and no speed work. Icing doesn't really help because of the lack of swelling, but mild heat does since it increases blodd flow. I put Dr. Scholl's heel pads in my road shoes and over the past several weeks I have noticed the pain diminishing. To the point where I can do a 20+ mile run virtually pain free now. I also find that if I can get off the roads and on to trails, the pain is less or nonexistent (and a whole lot more fun). I read about this in Dr. Timothy Noakes' "Lore of Running" in the chapter on injuries. Good luck, I know what a pain the achilles can be.
