Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

2:21:11.  25:12 + 1:00:32/55:25 (8:58/8:12).  Last 2 miles @ 7:20 pace.  Very hot today.  89F and sunny when I finished (at 12:30 PM, not the smartest thing really but I could not get motivated to get out earlier).  I ran a slightly different route on the Rillito trail today (the flat route with water!).  First I ran ~ 2.5 miles (25:12) going towards where I used to live, they have been "working" on the trail and wanted to see how it looked.  Mainly what they did was put asphalt down - which I didn't like.  There was a "sort of" soft dirt trail off to the side, but it was really soft, and not great for running.  In the "old days" it was just plain ole dirt, and I liked it a lot.  Anyway, I saw it and it was nice to see a familiar route that I hadn't seen for a while.  Then I ran back to my "usual" starting place (that has mile markers) and ran the 1/4 mile to the first marker (2 1/2 mile marker) and ran down to the park that has the nice cold drinking fountains (9 mile marker) and back.   All and all a good run, I felt strong at the end, and got faster and faster every mile from the turn around.

I saw the funniest thing.  A 70+ year old guy, very tan, no shirt, riding a bike in a SPEEDO!!!  yikes.  Ok, I was in shorts and a sports bra, but still, A SPEEDO! so funny.  I also saw a "city coyote" - he was not as healthy looking as our "country coyotes" he was scrawny and was missing a tail (ouch).  Our coyotes look fat and furry.

Congratulations to all the awesome racers from yesterday -- man, there were some rockn times!!

Happy Sunday bloggers!

Nice long run in the heat. And let's hear it for good ole' dirt.

Speaking of interesting things you see on the run, I forgot to mention on my blog yesterday that I saw two donkeys on the trail. They were being led by people who were walking and would presumably ride the donkeys at some point.

City coyotes, proof that country life is healthier.

25 years ago there was this guy who was kind of a legend, who we (my high school peers and I) would see running in Sugarhouse park all the time. Always in nothing but a speedo, really long hair, and always deeply tanned. We used to call him "Mr. Salty" for some reason. The funny thing is, my wife, 8 years my junior, also knew of this legendary figure, also referred to as Mr. Salty.

nice running in that heat. the world needs more old guys in speedos (not to be taken literally) ;)

JD -- i am now on a quest to find mr. salty. i am convinced he is still alive. i'll be sure to get a picture.

Speedo's, sports bras and city coyotes, Oh My! My father lives in Fla on the Gulf side - south of Sarasota. Anyway, total retirement community and every time we visit and go to the beach, we see at least a few people in the 70-80's in speedo's.... I am never quite sure if they 'forgot' the rest of their clothes or if they are making the most of the golden years :)

Are you sure it wasn't Burt?

From Bonnie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 20:51:52 from 150.135.115.182

Mr. Salty!! ha ha ha ha ... I want to see pictures and proof of this!

Dan - you will know in a few short years ;-)

Tracy, it was funny, I was trying to figure out how to work this in to Burt's blog ... I don't think so though, have you seen those knee length basketball shorts he runs in? Maybe when he wrestles ....hhmmmmm

CinC -- that is too funny. I forgot, I saw two women being pulled in these little wagons by pony's too!!

I'm not ready for the summer heat yet. It'll be here in Baltimore soon enough. But it sounds liek you had a great run.

From Bonnie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 22:48:08 from 150.135.115.182

KMTM -- I was in Baltimore for a meeting a couple of years ago (in July), the airline lost my luggage so I did not get my running stuff until nearly 1PM ... I was staying between the Inner Harbor and Fells Point and got on that bike path over there. I ran in some pretty sketchy neighborhoods, but since it was 90F and 90% humidity no one else was out. It was miserable, the only thing worse would have been to miss the run entirely ;-).

From Kevin-Miler turned Marathoner on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 22:57:56 from 98.140.204.40

The "no one else is out" is what I tell my wife about running at 4:30 in the morning. But I agree--missing a run is the worst.

Wow, nice heat! Good run in the nice heat. The phrase "they run for fun in the hot, hot sun" comes to mind for some reason. Dr. Seuss?

From Bonnie on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 17:33:22 from 128.196.228.134

oh Chris, don't be shy, I know you wore speedos in your last cross-country race ;-)

Man in a speedo on a bicycle. HAHAHA!

Speedo on a bike? Not even the triathletes do that (lol).
