marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:22:22.  Went to the track today, it was windy as all get-out.  Had a cross wind on the straightaways a head wind on the back turn and a tail wind on the first turn.  There were kids from the PE class all over the track and at least one lap I almost fell over a football - very exciting.

The workout was not very good. I did  6 x 800 w/400 recovery slower than last November (3:31, 3:34, 3:33, 3:34, 3:36, 3:35).  It seemed that I lost 2 seconds on the second lap pretty consistently since I went through the first 200/400 at :53/1:46 every time ... after a 400 recovery after the last 800 I did 3x200 w/200 recovery (:52 every one) -- pretty odd that my 200s are about the same pace as when I run my 800s.  I would think that suggests that I really have not developed any leg speed what so ever in the past couple of years.  I wish I could say it is because that is not what I have been focused on ... but I am not sure.  I seem to be pretty good at the steady state (just at or below LT pace) - but I am just not very good at the AT pace workouts (tempo/5K pace).

This workout would translate into a slightly slower than 22 min 5K right now -- how this is going to affect my 1/2 marathon is not at all clear ... but it is clear I have lost quite a bit of leg speed in the past couple years and need to get back to the track if I decided to run any 5-10K's anytime soon.

Have a good day bloggers.

Was there wind in your November workout? Wind can have a really bad effect on times around a track. The tailwind doesn't make up for the headwind-not fair at all.

I don't think track workouts are necessary if you are training for 5K's and 10K's unless you are racing them on the track. But the intervals (whether on track or road) of 400-1 mile are necessary for a shorter race focus. Your tempos will be much better indicators for your half than this workout will be, however.

Hi Michelle - Happy Mother's Day (a couple of days early). No wind in November ... and you are right - the track is pretty unforgiving. I think I generally think of 400s and mile repeats on the track because they are the only place where I have done these before (I really liked the Provo trail, though the track is closer for me ;-) ).

Yes, I agree that the tempo's are much more of a 1/2 indicator. I feel much better this week (running-wise). I have been taking iron pills for almost 2 weeks and feel better both at work and when I run) - plus I have been trying to focus on more on what I eat and how much I have been sleeping.

I just can't believe how "slow" my legs have gotten in 2 years!

Have a good weekend! Are you tapering for Ogden? We need to do an easy run after our races - so we can talk again!

Bonnie
