3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

AM: (10.5 miles, 1:27:11). Cruise interval workout: 5 x 1000 w/200 recovery + 3 x 200 w/200 recovery. Target pace (4:18 - 4:25, 6:55-7:04/mile). 4:25 (1:10), 4:21 (1:12), 4:21 (1:15), 4:16 (1:15), 4:23 (1:16) + :48, :49, :49 (7:04, 6:56, 6:56, 6:51, 7:01/mile pace for the 1Ks + the 200s which really aren't worth calculating the mile split for).  So cool that I did the same workout as MichelleL today (again) -- although hers were WAY awesome and fast ... good thing was, if we had done this workout together it is short enough that she wouldn't "quite" have been able to lap me ;-).  I felt the same way afterward -- this is a fun workout, it is fast enough to be a challenge, but short enough that it doesn't really feel that hard.  And you certainly feel like you could do a few more.


I can't believe how badly I suck on the 200s, I guess it probably didn't help that I threw down a :48 first 200 on my 4th kilo ;-), I couldn't help it ... my competitive nature got the best of me, there was a guy who was jogging on the track and he jump on right behind me as I was finishing the last 200 meters of my third K, well when I hit the finish and jumped over into lane 3 to do my recovery he ran past and said, "I was right on your heels". Since my recovery was so short I started about 10m behind him, and I just couldn't help myself I just ran really hard to blow by him. I never did "slow down" the way I should have and hit the first 400 in 1:39, a little fast for what I was supposed to be running. The most annoying thing about this run though, was that when I hit the start line EVERY SINGLE TIME I got a huge bug in my eye, there must have been a swarm of them there -- it was pretty hard trying to concentrate on keeping my 200 split in the right pace when I couldn't see out at least one eye, after about the first 400 I could squeeze out a little tear and it would at least get it out of my field of vision ... but I swear, every single start!!

PM: (4 miles easy).

Happy Tuesday bloggers .... we are supposed to have our first 90F day today ... I am not really all that happy about it, to tell you the truth. But, it could be worse (it could be July and 120F).

Hey Scott! When did you change your name back from redrooster? This was my usual 'race week' rust buster - I am racing in a 1/2 marathon on Saturday. I think my coach likes to remind my legs that they have to run fast this week, despite it being a taper week.

When are classes over for you guys? I am done lecturing next week (YEA). I am so glad. Although I have a grant resubmission in July and a big grant review in June. And, as I am sure you understand, I have to get some papers finished before the fall semester. I just don't have time when I am teaching ... Are you racing this summer? I loved the TOU 1/2, great race, nice place that Logan.

May 6th is my last final (2 of them!) and I'll be done until June 1st. That is going to be one short "summer break". Oh well, anything is better than nothing!

Sorry about the bugs. We definitely have swarms of them here too which is soooooooo annoying. I hate those darn things. I think we are getting the leftover snow that Carolyn woke up to yesterday... It's cold here! In the 60's! When it has been in the mid-80's, that is a shock to your system. It is perfect running weather though, so I'm not complaining too much! I'd rather it be 60 than 90 any day.

Nice run, Bonnie. I would've passed the guy on the track too. Jerk. I can't wait to see how you do at the half this weekend!

I changed to my real name when I finally figured out how to do it under user options (I'm not too bright).

I am doing a 20K this saturday, 0.7 miles less that a half marathon, and I am grateful for the lesser distance. good luck in your half- you should do great with the training youhave out in.

I'm not teaching this semester as I doubled up in the fall- just writing papers, study section, need to get some proposals in, etc etc. here is the link to our paper that just came out in Biochemistry if you are interested :-)

Bonnie, yes, we are on nine months here, which was great for 16 years when I had grant money for summer salary but unfortunately I have fallen on tough times and will have to take a big salary hit this summer. I might have money for one month. oh well. I can always run more...

what is the link for your dept homepage so I can check out what you are working on? I study microbial metabolism mostly from a mechanistic enzymology approach.

It is not very informative. The focus of my research for the past few years has been in biomarker discovery, primarily genomic biomarkers. I am resubmitting a grant to come up with new methods and computational algorithms for analyzing miRNA - primarily those that are involved with gene transcription and colon cancer (APC/Wnt pathways). Exciting stuff! I really like it and it sort of crosses over into your metabolism area (the lab I work with is interested in polyamine transport).

Sorry about the salary hit, we are furloughing starting in June, but ASU faculty have it much worse than us, since we all are at least 50% on soft money that so far is still around.

Carolyn, the fastest these were done at slightly faster than 10K pace - so 3 miles at that pace is not nearly as hard as trying to do this at 5K pace. I am glad that Greg does not advocate any workouts that are really hard (some of them are long, and they hurt near the end, but none of them are in the "hurt" or "puke" region) - or impossible to hit/maintain.
