Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:17:58 - nice run, almost the same run as last Thursday - up Wasatch Drive and back on trail by Heritage Park -- I added on a little at the end (a extra uphill section) ... felt pretty good at the end, but I have to say, I felt pretty sad and slow on the way out!  Nice day for a run, still tights weather, but the sun was out and it was pretty.  I saw 4 other runners today -- the first time I have ever run into that many people on this run.  Only one said "good morning" back to me ... sad, this happens to me a lot here in SLC - almost everywhere I have ever visited runners say "hi" to eachother - but when I say it here people just ignore me ...

Happy Day Bloggers.

I hear you there, Bonnie. It's always a little disheartening to give a "morning!" or "good afternoon" and not get one in response :( If I saw you I would have given you a smile and a "Happy April Fool's Day!" though :-D

From Bonnie on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 13:28:28

ha ha ha -- I had actually forgotten Benn - maybe that is why the ladies did not say HI (it was their April Fool's on me).

Happy Fool's Day to you too!

It was a shock to me to move from CA to UT and have it be not any more cheery in my experience from runner to runner. I am not sure if they are in their own world or what but reciprocation of the "good morning" I throw out is definitely under 50%.

From Bonnie on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 13:57:32

I am both saddened that it also happens to you - yet glad that it is not just me (he he -- like "wow, did you just see that weirdo who said hi to me?") - since I run in the morning it is possible that my hair standing straight up on one side of my head, with the horizontal pillow crease on my face might scare away the most friendly runner ;-).

At least now I can look for the "fastrunningblog" shirts and know that the wearer of the shirt will be friendly!!

Two more weeks Michelle!! Yea!

Hey, are you running striders this weekend? If not why don't you come down and do the provo 1/2 (I am racing it--isn't that reason enough :) )? I would love to meet you this year as we race so keep me informed when you race. Eventually it will work out :)

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 14:26:59

I have not noticed much difference between Utah and other states in terms of runner friendliness. I did notice that Utah has the highest ratio of runners per smoker, though. In fact, I think this is about the only place I've been where that ratio is higher than 1. I must admit my wave is rather pathetic during a tempo run, I think it looks like Brezhnev's. Some runners respond to greetings, others do not in my experience, probably the rate is about 50%. But I discovered that if I turn around, catch up to the runner, and initiate the conversation, we get along very well.

From jtshad on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 14:31:11

I acknowledge all the runners I see (and most the walkers as well). Around here, I get about a 75% response rate so maybe Idaho is a more friendly state!

From MichelleL on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 14:37:39

Sasha - I would just not run too close to anyone you are initiating a conversation with. You might get peppersprayed someday :) Now that I know you it won't be me, but some other jogger might.

Jeff - It might be the way you do it too. Sometimes my greetings get lazy and my

"Good morning!" turns into a "mornin'". I figure "mornin'" is a lame greeting since most realize it is morning without my observation.

From Bonnie on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 14:39:29

ha ha ha ... higher runner to smoker ratio, I really like that! Running Times this month had an article that rated SLC as one of the highest marathon runner states. I generally only smile/grimace at people during a tempo run -- I have never even attempted a Brezhnev wave. I think you would be hard to ignore Sasha, especially if you ran up to catch me!

Michelle, the Provo half sounds really cool, it is just 2 weeks too early for me I will definately try to get into some races this summer!

Perhaps people in Utah are just shy. You have to do what Sasha does to bring them out of their shells.

From Bonnie on Tue, Apr 01, 2008 at 15:58:21

I can't turn and catch any of you! And even if I did, "hi" would probably be the only thing I could say ;-) after that it would be all about me and oxygen!
