Running Accomplishments:

A marathon runner just trying to enjoy good health and running long. 22 years between marathon 6 & 7, raising kids. 48 marathons and counting. Average finishing time ~  3:25. Want to keep this average above 3:30 as I continue to age deepin into my 50's.   Looking for a 3:12 in SLC 2012

Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep my SL Marathon time in "teens". Possibly break the teens (3:12 - 3:00).  Two screws in right knee gives me a reality check on my ambitions. I don't want to sacrafice my joint for too crazy of a goal. Good health is my real goal.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running strong into my 60's, and add to my marathon count.  In 1982 I finished St. George at 2:57, 1 second behind a 60 year old. I've always  wondered if I could break 3 hours when I'm in my 60's. I'd like to find out.

Personal:

Married 26 years. Rosalie and I have 4 children. Love running hills, especially up Millcreek Canyon. I live 3/4 mile from its base.

Redrock Marathon 2011: 3:33 - major accomplish. 3,300' elevation gain.

SLC Marathon 2009, 2010 & 2011 : 3:15

Ogden Marathon 2010: 3:22

Teton Dam Marathon 2010 3:18

Deseret News 2010 3:47 (broke arm 30 hours before run - arm in cast)

Park City Marathon 2010 3:45 (arm in cast)

Pocatello Marathon 2010: 3:12

St. George Maratho 3:10 (2009 & 2010) 3:08:50 (2011)

Excellent weather.  Splits were 55:30 @ 8; 1:52:55 @ 16.  Half was 1:32:10. I knew I was in a little trouble with my knee. Caused me to limp a little, and loose my ~7 m.p.m pace. "Better life through chemistry" Tylenol helped; 1200 mg. Started slowing down 5th east until Liberty Park, then motivated again. A 3:15 was possible if I could just hold ~8 mpm . I came close with 3:16:35. At mile 23, Craig Romrell was willing to pace me up State Street, but I waved him off to help Burke Hills reach his 3:30. He missed it by 45 seconds.

Blisters were a thing, mostly on my right foot, which started to heat up way too early (like around 10 miles). The 5-toe socks were good. Will use them again.  I needed to run more tempo distances to toughen my feet up to "push-off and strike" at that pace. Recreation speed doesn't toughen up the feet.  Need a few 10-15 tempo runs at 7 mpm.

My half time was 5 minutes faster than last year 2009, yet I finished 2.5 minutes slower overall. I didn't perform so well in the last half. Maybe I went out a little too fast. Should have held back some. Pete Petersen passed me at 17. He can  hold the pace consistently whereas my 2nd half time slows down about 10 minutes.

Great job. Way to battle the little aches and pains, and that's a really nice time. I think you are right about the longer marathon pace tempo runs. The more you put your body through the same kind of stresses it will experience in the race, the better.
