Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

A marathon runner just trying to enjoy good health and running long. 22 years between marathon 6 & 7, raising kids. 48 marathons and counting. Average finishing time ~  3:25. Want to keep this average above 3:30 as I continue to age deepin into my 50's.   Looking for a 3:12 in SLC 2012

Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep my SL Marathon time in "teens". Possibly break the teens (3:12 - 3:00).  Two screws in right knee gives me a reality check on my ambitions. I don't want to sacrafice my joint for too crazy of a goal. Good health is my real goal.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running strong into my 60's, and add to my marathon count.  In 1982 I finished St. George at 2:57, 1 second behind a 60 year old. I've always  wondered if I could break 3 hours when I'm in my 60's. I'd like to find out.

Personal:

Married 26 years. Rosalie and I have 4 children. Love running hills, especially up Millcreek Canyon. I live 3/4 mile from its base.

Redrock Marathon 2011: 3:33 - major accomplish. 3,300' elevation gain.

SLC Marathon 2009, 2010 & 2011 : 3:15

Ogden Marathon 2010: 3:22

Teton Dam Marathon 2010 3:18

Deseret News 2010 3:47 (broke arm 30 hours before run - arm in cast)

Park City Marathon 2010 3:45 (arm in cast)

Pocatello Marathon 2010: 3:12

St. George Maratho 3:10 (2009 & 2010) 3:08:50 (2011)

Late start this morning, but after all the high and jr. high school traffic settled down, I went up to Neff's canyon by way of Oakridge. Lengthened out the run a little and gave it more of a loop feel rather than out-and-back. Light snow made it quite slippery.

Went to the gate - 11 miles with two 2-mile tempo's. Made rattlesnake in 17:49 (good time), hit the bridge near church fork at 29:48 (good time), then the 5800' sign at 33:15. So the two+ tempo miles form snake to 5800 was 15 minutes (12:30 minutes in reverse). Slowed down some and hit the gate at 44:30. Would have made elbow by 1:00 but turned around.  Turned up at the stop sign 1.5 miles to Mt. Olympus , then home. 14 mile run in 1:50.  A good time, and I didn't feel 100%. My stomach felt crowded.

Early run. Went across wasatch pedestrian bridge, all the way 1.5 miles to top of Gilead, back down and then up to Neff's Canyon, and home. Felt way nice to climb those hills.

A ringing wet one. Rained then snowed. Started at 43-deg. Ended at 35-deg. Went the 13.35 route to 7-eleven at base of canyons, and back through holladay to S-curve, up berkshire.  Stopped my watch at 1:40:00, Changed out of my  heavy wet shirts and gloves and into dry (except shoes which were soaked too but...) Got a drink and left again. Went up to top of Gilead 2.8 miles 28 mins, gaining ~800 feet, so not too bad being tired and wet with slushy ground snow. Retract up to Neff's trail head, and down to canyon road. Up the 1.33 miles to water tanks, again gaining ~400 feet, then back to canyon road. Turned up the 0.5 miles to fee station, and finially home.  The second route was 9.5 miles, and it took 1:30:00 way slow but cold and wet slowed me down. Didn't have any nourishment except for 20 oz gatorade. A little weak. Overall 22 miles in 3:10. Under such conditions, I'm pleased. Need to work on hills and speed now for the next two weeks.

Black sheep group; ran st. mary's foothills. I pushed but held back. Was stiff at first. Then as most of the group were tiring, I was just starting to feel loose. We ended with 7.

Long and slow. Across Parley's Canyon, down and around Sugarhouse Park, up to Tanner's Park, through the gulley and across the freeway, up into the foothills near the water tanks, and home. Started out at 28-degrees. Ended at 31-degrees 2 hours later. Wanted to got 18, but needed to see the YSA basketball game. Red Rock Marathon in two weeks.  Felt slow having run for the last two weeks in shorts, but this time needing my long pants. Actually it was slow. That's what I get from a combination enchalada / taco plate at Tres Hombres the night before.

With Froerer, went up to top of Gilead, back over to Neffs, down to MCC stop sign where we did three sprints, pumping up our already hot legs with lactic acid.  Actually hit the "wall" on the last two sprints. Then, worked our way up MCC to Log Haven where Rosalie pick us up. About 1600' elevation gain across the 10 miles.
