Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to accomplish my short term goals first... Once I do that, I will have an idea of what to expect long term... 44 yrs old now and since I've been injured free for 1 month I am jumping back on marathon training. Any recommendations for a good marathon in December 2021? What is your recommendation?

Personal:

Don't knock it until you try it.

Houston Marathon Summary:

Things did not go my way this weekend... I lost my contact lens on Friday and I didn't have an extra lens. It made things difficult the whole entire weekend especially in the marathon. Slept at 10:00pm on Saturday and woke up at 3:30 am yea I couldn't go back to sleep. We left the hotel at 5:00 am and dropped off our bags at 6:20 we left to our corrals right after. My goal was to go 2:28 for the whole distance.

Here are my 5k splits for the marathon
5k 17:38 5:41 pace
10k 17:40 5:41 pace
15k 17:34 5:41 pace
20k 17:53 5:42 pace
25k 18:27 5:45 pace this is where I just wanted to get off the course my legs felt heavy my breathing and upper body were fine but my lower body was toasted. One thing I did not like about Houston is running on the Crete it pretty much destroyed my legs it's a nice course and fast but if you can't handle the Crete forget it!

30k 19:14 5:49 pace get me out of here!

35k 19:32 5:53 pace and let the passing game begin

40k 21:11 about 15 runners passed me including women haha I got chicked

2k 10:07 I was done already!

A) felt like i was losing my balance I was picking up my legs higher than usual because I was afraid of stepping on something (missing a contact made me feel unbalance)

B) didn't do any marathon specific work just ran single runs in the 90's for 8 weeks

C) I'm fine it's a perfect setup for boston gotta work on my tempos and thresholds!

That's how the cookie crumbled!

Here is my heart rate for the McAllen Marathon that I used as a training on Dec 11, 2011

Here is the one from Houston Marathon Jan 15, 2012 almost a month from McAllen I should have been able to run 5:38-5:40, but the concrete in Houston trashed my legs by mile 12. I posted the comparison because everyone asked me why didn't I run between 2:28-2:34. So I decided to post my heart rate of the two marathon in less than 34 days, I couldn't have been glycogen depleted by 12 miles, I should've DNF, but I've never dropped out of a race so I decided to finish it.

I can't imagine running without a contact- that would be annoying. Good race, and hope you get in great shape for Boston.

Jon: yea very annoying but o well, will do my best in the next 90 days to get this on rhe right track!

Good run Benny, sometimes the running gods just conspire against us!

I am definitely paying the price today for running in flats for 26 miles on all that concrete...

Solid race nonetheless. Good job!

Benny that is a really solid race off of just base training. Once you get some marathon-specific workouts in, you'll be rolling @ Boston!

From Benny's on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 18:23:00 from 24.170.92.226

Slowjoe: you can say that again! hehe

Superfly: thanks man! just gotta get back to what works

Jake: thanks for your encouragement! You are a freaking beast!

Benny,

Sorry to hear it didn't go as planned but it's still a good training and experience for future races(including Boston). I don't know a lot about running but I do know that we all have good days and we all have bad days! You know it will get better!
