Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

8:40 AM - Last run in New York before going to Massachusetts to Emma's house and then to Boston to fly out to California! Finished reading Geoff Williams's book on C.C. Pyle's 1928 Bunion Derby today. It kept me hooked until the end. One of the best books I've read about distance runners. Next on my list I am going to reread Running Through the Wall: Personal Encounters with the Ultramarathon. I liked it the first time I read it so hopefully it will be a love the second time around :). Felt good on the treadmill this morning. Will be nice to run on the beaches though in California! Can't wait!

Hey man, I've been flying under the radar for a week or so and haven't really been on the blog much other than to post my all-too-infrequent runs.

In any case, I was scanning your week last week and saw the awesome treadmill run. 100 minutes ... impressive... What are you training for? Do I smell an ultra?

Cool new pic, by the way...

So I guess that running is out for a bit. California is awesome, but the second day here we were doing a lot of walking around the city and my right hip started hurting. It got worse the next day and has developed into a constant burning that makes sitting, walking and doing anything but standing straight up painful. I took about 4000mg of extra strength tylenol and ibuprofen yesterday and soaked it to no affect. Really bummed. Yes, Nevels I was thinking of an ultra and/or a trail series but just don't know where this pain came from or why it's happening to me. I wasn't even running. Can't go to the docs either because since I graduated I lost my health insurance. Grrrr.

I was thinking maybe it's the tensor fascie latae? idk though. It's the right hip, in the front and off to the right a bit like where your leg meets your torso.

Have been taking it easy and reading up on what might be the problem. I think it might be a pinched nerve since there is a "burning sensation". I suppose I will rest it as much as possible. Have been using heat as well. I am afraid to try to run with it hurting. I am really bummed though because I brought my running stuff and wanted to jog on the beach. Grr! Does anyone know if it is safe to run with a pinched nerve? The pain hasn't gotten better or worse for about three days now. It's pretty constant even with extra strength Tylenol.

From Nevels on Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 15:39:47 from 131.204.15.93

At one point, a trainer thought I had a pinched nerve (found out a day or two later that it wasn't), and he said it wouldn't do any more damage to run on it, but it might hurt like the blazes. Beyond that, I don't really know much about it. That being said, it might be a good idea to go out for a mile or two just to see what happens. (disclaimer: if it were me, I'd go try to run a mile or so, but at the first sign of worsening, I'd bag it and walk home)

Good luck...

I agree with Nevels; that is, try running on it (concentrate on your form to get your mind off of the pain) and if it gets noticeably worse, stop. Best of luck!

Going with Emmy to a hole in the wall doc today. It costs $150 upfront, but hopefully they can diagnose me. I really want to try to hobble at least a mile on the beach before I leave. I'm going to ask the doc if that would put any extra strain on it. Keep you posted. Thanks for the thoughts and kind wishes. Why is it that my heart would be content with 10-20 miles easy every day, but my body doesn't want me to do it? Haha. If I had 3 wishes one of them would most certainly be to have the ability to run as far and long as I wanted to each and every day.

Went to the MedStop and found out I have Trochanteric Bursitis of my right hip. Got prescribed Tylenol with Codeine and told to ice the hip. I had been doing heat because a couple people recommended heat but that just seemed to make the pain hurt more. I don't know how long it will take for recovery though. No idea where the bursitis came from either. Perhaps from treadmill running at an incline?

Howling Commando - enjoying the golden state sunshine? how is the injury, back to running? Nice black and white pic.
