thought about not running to recover but couldn't say no to Haynes. achilles still hurting. didn't get worse during the run but probably take the next day off. there is a trail marathon looming next sunday so more rest is probably better anyways.

Make sure you are icing and massaging the area. I am a huge believer in scraping you can read about it http://fastrunningblog.com/forum/index.php/topic,308.0.html here.

Im sorry josse, but as a medical student I don't believe in scraping as there are no hard scientific facts. People throw out theories that do include some technical jargon but have no evidence behind them. Bedoukian is icing regularly. Massaging is also a debatable therapy. Depending on the type of injury and type of massage it can be beneficial or harmful. But I do not think that any message therapy is very benefitial for an inflammatory injury (which this most likely is).

Bedoukian - its smart of you to take a few days off. You need to be fully healed for the trail marathon and your ultra in july. You will have plenty of time to get your miles up for the marathon in late october.

That is fine, but I don't need scientific data to back up something the Chinese have been doing for centuries and I have been doing for over 11 years and seen it work on myself as well as countless others. I am not saying it is for everyone but I haven't had any complant form the people that are back running in no time when I do it to them. By the way I am a massage theripist.

Thanks for the advice Josse and the healthy debate by Haynes. I took a day off and ran again today an easy 7.5 and after some initial discomfort it loosened up and was virtually nonexistent during the run. I iced for about 15 min after and haven't noticed it. I haven't been good about my stretching either which could be part of the problem. I'm hopeful that it was just a temporary strain that started acting up because i wasn't ready for 4 back to back trail runs of 2hrs, 2hrs, 3.5hrs, and 7.3 hrs (day of first discomfort during the run). The fact that 1 day of rest is enough to almost alleviate symptoms entirely bodes well. I'll do a 5 mile tempo run tomorrow afternoon and if it hurts during i'll finish and then take 2 full days off before the trail marathon. I would be interested in trying scraping but for now lots of icing seems to be helping. Hopefully this isn't the start of 2 chronic injuries instead of 1 :) Maybe 1 day i'll be able to afford a massage therapist!

I like a good debate and everyone is entiled to there own opinion (even if it is not the same as mine).

I would think that all that long trail running is to blame. And it is a good thing that is gone. I just like to be proactive and don't ignore discomfort. So I am scraping and massaging myself alot but it alows me to feed my addiction;)

Haynes-I can't wait until Matt is beating you because he is a beleiver in alternative modalities;)

Oh yes good luck to both of you in the trail marathon! I'm get a little jelous when I read about all your trail running. The mountains are my true passion but my ankles just don't handle them well.

From matt on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 23:53:56

which is the real race, the trail or the road? a road isn't natural. Josse, have you tried ankle braces? what happens to your ankles? I just think you can train so much better on the trails or at least dirt roads. It just isn't bad for you like the pavement. I try not to do more than 20% of my mileage on roads. It's hard not to start overdoing training when you start to see lots of improvement quickly. it just is never fast enough.

i think i'm in trouble though as soon as haynes gets his MD. He'll have access to all the performance enhancing drugs and get his friends to write prescriptions.

From josse on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:23:00

I have tried taping my ankles but that drives me crazy. I supinate when I run and so when I get tired I easily roll my right ankle and have some bad sprains. I also tried these strape things that was suppose to help me not supinate but they made the inside of my knees hurt. I do run on a canal (dirt) road when I can because I agree with you. But really I just love the beauty of the trails and we have so many great ones hear (I live minutes away from the Wasatch mountains). Another reason I don't get on them as much anymore is because the people I train with know are not trail runner. One of my favorites runs is to run to the top of the Timpanoges mountian during wild flower season.
