Was feeling kind of bad about my running as of late. All been slow trail runs around 10 min/mile pace and last weekends 5k was a disaster. I know i had a trail marathon the week before and ran one of my highest mileages of the season but i've just been feeling sluggish lately. I knew i'd be upset if i didn't drive the 2.5hrs to the greylock trail race today. I just didn't want to get blown away and maintain my good race record.

The first 4 min of running are flat as we make our way to the base of the first climb of about 1000' or so in 2.5 miles. I started slow as i was determined not to go out too fast and be conservative. i didn't feel that bad during warmups which was a good sign and felt like i had some fight in me maybe...This one guy ben nephew almost always wins easily unless there is a true elite racing so he was gone, then the next pack were 2 guys, one of whom i had beaten by a very slim margin a couple of races ago for the first time. I was content to be in 4th place after 10 min of climbing. There were a lot of guys though, you could see on the switch backs not too far back. One guy kind of passed me and blew by me so now i was in 5th place. Another guy in the next 5 min barely went by me and didn't get too far away. Another guy was right on me. We crested the hill with me in 6th place and it was time for the long 2.5 mile downhill to the turnaround. I ran kamikaze like i usually do and easily passed the guy in front of me and almost caught up to the guy who had passed me easily earlier. The guys in 2nd and 3rd were within striking distance as well at the bottom but i knew my climbing skills are relatively weak to theirs. I just wanted to hold my position.

I now had at least 1min maybe 1:30 on the people behind me at the 5.1 mile mark. time for the 2+ mile uphill. I felt pretty good, aided by being in 5th place. i always get this spirit when i know i'm doing pretty well for myself. I held my position and then annihilated the downhill...i was 15 sec back with 5k left of 4th place. The downhill was over though. The next part was more technical and i felt tired and exhausted but i knew everyone else was too. I finished it out in 5th, minutes ahead of 6th and about a min back from 4th.

Good confidence booster today! Last year i finished 18th, and was over 10 min slower than this year. I also rather foolishly decided i'd climb greylock (highest mtn in mass) after. I decided on my way up i would do that and one of my friends said he'd be up for it too, but after racing bailed. smart! It was only 2.2 miles to the top and ~2200 feet up. I chose the steepest trail and it took me 1hr 21 min. I was sucking it on the way up, feeling my breath in my ears, couldn't get my heart rate to chill out. about halfway up i thought i might kill myself but fought on. The top was awesome...i met a girl who was doing the entire appalachian trail...she had started from georgia! Pretty cool. Ran down a slightly longer way 2.8 miles in 40 min.

Tonight i ate tons! it was awesome. Total exercise time today 2 minutes shy of 4hrs....
north west CT and western mass are beautiful. I enjoyed the drive lots!

only major complaint was my left achilles/calf started acting up today...doesn't feel bad now, will ice it. the right one which has been troublesome is fine at least...will probably rest up tomorrow. will hopefully have a better mileage week than last week.

Solid race. 1:46 for a trail half marathon is great especially with that much climbing. Wish I was there. Hopefully I will regain that fitness and then some in my 18 mile race on saturday.

Was the 'friend' Tom? I thought he was dead to you, lol.

It sucks here, I don't have any time to myself really. I will probably have 1 weekend all summer without my mom (either her here or me at home). And I can't do like long trail runs with her around because she doesn't like how much I run. It doesn't really matter how much I work this summer (and my parents are weird and give me money when I need it and not in any discernible merit based pattern) and I know I can complete the projects my PI has given me working much less than full time. So I think I might just take most of one day off (just go in for 20 minutes for tissue culture) each week and do a long trail run. I just hate not being in control of my life. It's my last free summer in my life. Shouldn't I have a bit of fun for myself? She must think that all I could want to do in my last summer is hang around her.

Oh and I guess I should forget about girls for the summer. If I'm gonna not gonna be in town for the weekends then there isn't much point in dating anybody (not that I had much chance anyway). I think your parents are more reasonable than mine are, but I just don't see how you are going to stand living at home for any length of time. It would absolutely undo me.

um, a high school GIRL in the US ran 4:16 for the 1500 in an all comers meet with no competition. She ran 4:33 for the 1600 at her state meet. The 1500 time qualified her for the olympic trials for that distance. Im quiting running. j/k

Tom totally bailed on me again :)

hid gf was there and used it as an excuse. not sure if they would have been able to make it as i almost didn't.

not being capable of beating hs girls in the mile haynes...not even close! well keep working, you may be able to finish on the same same straightaway with her one day.. only 15 sec back!

don't know what would happen if you just told your mom you were doing that stage race or doing stuff on your own every once in a while so i can't say stand up for yourself...but seriously sounds pretty weird, i guess i'd have to meet your family to know the dynamic.

So far i'm enjoying the 48 dollars a day i'm saving on rent. not to mention i haven't paid for any food yet either...i saw a snake though at the new place i go running on sat. but the place has about a 4-5 mile loop of a carriage trail which puts me at ease.

just do the stage race...it'll be awesome. what's going to happen?

You don't understand, she is coming to chattanooga with me. So I can't exactly do the race without her knowing. She is only partly ok with me doing the 18 mile day and I haven't suggested to her that I do the whole race. I don't know what we are gonna do in chattanooga besides my race. She wanted to go on a trip with me and I was like, there is a race in chattanooga and she decided to come.

From bedoukian on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 16:26:34

why not just tell her you really want to do it? do they think you'll drop dead from running too much?

From haynes on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 16:28:56

A quote from my mother just with weekend--"I am really glad that you stopped doing marathons, I just don't think it is healthy physically or mentally." Of course she doesn't know that I did a trail marathon 2 weeks ago and am signed up for a marathon in october.

From bedoukian on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 16:37:01

as long as she doesn't stop supporting your education or ability to survive i would just tell her you love running and that there is no scientific proof that marathons are bad. sure when you go up to 100 miles i would be afraid if my kids did that.

From haynes on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 16:46:00

I don't think we discussed my mom much on all of those runs we did together. She is not reasonable and always wins. The best you can do is go with the flow and not cause a complete breakdown. A major fight might not result directly from running, but everything adds up with my mom and when she reaches a threshold, everybody in the family will be made unhappy for weeks at a time. I think 90% of why she doesn't like me doing marathons is that it shows my addiction to running. And she thinks that addiction to anything is bad. I say it isn't heroine or child pornography so why not.

I finally left a message for that guy who keeps hitting the top of the mileage board because of his cycling. I tried to make it as polite as possible, but you know that I am only slightly better than you are at not saying what I think. We will see what happens. How goes your plan to find someone in your area and convince them that 4x5x400 is the best workout ever? I guess you might not be planning on doing any of those until after iceland. When is that anyway? Any 50k specific training you are planning on? After that trail marathon, I think that weekly 7-16 mile trail races and one or two long run/hikes is optimal. The only thing I think that I could have done better for that race is taper.

From bedoukian on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 13:51:38

yeah that guy shouldn't do that, it doesn't make sense. does he think he deserves to be on top of the mileage board? can't wait to find out! I'm not interested in track workouts until after iceland. July 12 is the race but i'm leaving july 6. I'm just going to hit hopefully 70 miles per week on trails starting this week or next if i don't have any aches. will probably do a 25 mile trail run probably the weekend after next and that will be it. Don't think there are any more races that i'll be doing since the only one coming up is near mt washington which would be 5+ hrs away from here! i was depressed how much ben beat me by at greylock. he ran 1:31...he did run recently a 10 miler in 54 minutes so he's def sick on the road as well. unfortunately to weed out competition i need to go to the 50k distance and beyond. by the way, iceland is 55k...

From haynes on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 14:17:05

I am sorry that I keep underestimating your hardcoreness. I am humbled. I think that your plan is good. 70 this week and 70 next week with a 25 miler then start the taper by getting 50-60 the next week and all easy low mileage the week of the race.

Ben nephew is a beast. He probably could go faster than that. Do we know if he even does workouts or just goes out and runs fast all of the time? In my workout last week I ran a single mile in 5:24 (his pace for 10) and it wasn't exactly easy. I was supposed to do the laps steady, fast, steady, fast and my times were 80 (whoops), 77 (needed to go faster than first lap), 86!?, 79 (no kick but was ready to be done). It was just a workout and in the middle of a bunch of other stuff, but it didn't feel good. I am better with a constant pace.
