During yesterday's run i wanted to quit running i was so frustrated. Today I took an advil which i never do and switched to my cure all 1lb each montrail hardrock running shoes. Have no idea when the last time i wore these were as the tread is starting to come off but they have soft shock absorbing inserts i had put in. I remember wearing these during a track workout with Haynes when i had a toe blister so bad i could barely walk. I tried on 4 different pairs of running shoes but they all were really painful. i looked online and found what i had and no sight mentioned time off...it doesn't really help, it just remains tight. So i went with the hard soled montrails and i'm not running on any trails for the time being cause any root or piece of rock just kills me. I warmed up for 2.3 miles on the dirt road by my house at just under 8:30 pace and then decided to do a 5 mile loop at tempo pace. I started in 6:35, 6:45,7:00,7:00, 6:50. It was pretty humid and the loop is very hilly with elevations from 550ft to 800ft. There was actually little pain by the end of the tempo run and then i did a 2.5 mile cool down (another loop) and it started to come back. Overall though feeling much better. Will stick to the roads this week. Even the dirt roads aren't comfortable anymore cause they have tiny pieces of gravel in them.

I think you need to get on to some flat roads (remember that 10 mile tempo on dirt roads where we had trouble hitting 7:15's). The pace will feel much more natural on a fast surface. But also I think you haven't fully recovered from the trail marathon a week ago. Just because you are not sore does not mean that it didn't affect you aerobically as well as musculoskeletally (is that a word?). So what is the problem with your foot? Just bruised? Pinched a nerve?

There really aren't any flat roads where i live. i'd have to go to the track. Before i knew the gps lied it said the loop i did gains 2300ft in 5 miles :) It's 1,000ft per 10 miles error on the track, so the run probably gains 500-1000ft. the flattest road around has too many cars on it and a poor shoulder.

Metatarsalgia is my self-diagnosis. The ball of the foot is feeling much better today after taking the advil and not aggravating it on the trails and wearing the magical montrails. I felt the pain start not during the marathon last sun but the day after when walking around. Just 2 more races left this year..

I advise you to go to the track for the next tempo workout if your blisters can handle it. Do the 3x2mile or the 4x2km workout. It will be much better mentally to have some decent times. Wear the montrails if you need to.

what pace do you recommend for the 3x2 mile?

From haynes on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 20:22:04

Once you are recovered from the marathon, doing 6:05-6:10 should be fairly easy (assuming the weather is not hot or windy). We did the 5 mile tempo at 6:10 pace but we had people behind us racing which helped. I did a 4x2km workout on thursday in which I hit 5:54 pace consistently. I had someone right with me the whole time though so that helped. He is sort of a douchebag, but I am hoping to get around that because we are perfectly matched for training.
