Couldn't sleep well last night. After the marathon when I got back home on sunday I was rubbing the top of my foot and i was nervous that i was feeling a pressure point on my 2nd metatarsal. It also looked swollen the next morning. I had felt no pain at all during the marathon and it didn't hurt to run but I thought it may be 50:50. So no running yesterday and this morning I decided to go run 6 and see. My left foot/ankle has been problematic for some time. For the last 1.5 yrs i've had to chronically ice my ankle to enable me to run every day. It's just an extremely tight foot. My arch was shooting with cramps too yesterday.

Anyways, the run didn't hurt my foot anywhere so a stress fracture is pretty much ruled out i hope. it would have been devastating with the iceland ultra only 6 weeks away now. i'm definitely going to buy new shoes today or tomorrow! Since I had stress fractures in h.s. and college i always worry about them and i'm kind of afraid to build mileage and push my limits. This season i've done that and taken the risk and have been really happy but i don't know what i would have done if i had to take 8 weeks off at this point.

I'll probably not build mileage this week and stay around 65. Surprisingly neither Haynes nor I had any soreness yesterday or today from the marathon, I felt just used up. Guessing i'll be back to full operation on thursday and hopefully will do the 5 mile training race.

Anyone know the standard/smart procedure for recovery from a marathon if it's done in season?

If you are not sore that means you are properly well trained. So you should feel recovered in a week, no longer than 2 weeks. If you run all out and are sore it will take you longer 3-4 weeks.

After my last marathon I got a similar thing with my foot, but mine is nerve related. It is probably just all the pounding. I take a hard ball or a can of soup and roll it on the bottom of my foot when it gets tight.

Thanks for the advice josse! you seem to have all of these good ways to handle running slightly more than one probably should! my left foot has been tight for 1.5yrs now. have to ice it every day after i run or it's bad news. it cracks a lot too :) doesn't get any worse at least.

trail running i think takes its toll. even though the dirt is nice and soft, running fast downhill on rocks and uneven terrain is a lot of impact.

That is what 11 years of massaging injured runner will do, and dealing with my own share of them. Try rolling out your foot everyday for a couple of weeks and see if it feels any better. It might get sore the first couple of times but should get better the more you do it.

My ankles and feet crack alot too. I think it is a sign you are getting old.

From matt on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 14:58:21

getting old!!! so I guess I was already aging poorly at 26 since it has been 2 years of cracking....the future does not look good for me!

i will def try the rolling. maybe it can reverse the aging process. my right ankle and foot are still young at least.

From josse on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 15:04:38

26 I thought from the picure you at least 40. Defantly the rolling will reverse the aging process so will rubbing peanut butter and beer all over your body. Btw- I actually thought you were only about 23 or 24 and make sure you wash all the peanut butter off because it attracts bears.

From matt on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 15:19:00

i'm 28 now. i would also suspect me to be younger than i am based on the fact that i associate with haynes and make ridiculous comments. i actually studied the genetics of aging for the past 2 years and find your rejuvenation theory intriguing...does it matter what kind of peanut butter i use? I would suspect the all natural kind...

From josse on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 16:32:49

Yes that is what I use and Mexican imported beer. Yes I was surprised to see your personal stuff, but it is good to see extreamly smart people with a sense of humor. Can't wait to read that science fiction novel of yours.

From haynes on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 21:41:22

Ok, I'll bite. Why does beer and peanut butter make you heal faster? And why mexican? Is it a wheat beer thing? Would peanut oil be the same/better/worse than peanut butter? I prefer mixing cayenne pepper with toothpaste and taking it rectally... Sorry, josse, ignore that last bit. I still want to know about the other stuff. I agree about the rollers though, basically stretches things you wouldn't normally stretch.

From josse on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 21:44:57

It only make you stay young and only just at heart because you get as messy as you would when you were a kid;) It really has no purpose at all I was just kidding, I hope the two of you are not covered in peanut butter and beer right now.

Lol, I thought you were totally serious. Thank god.

i'm very offended that food and drink would be wasted "for fun" when there are people starving...also, alcohol is the devil!
