Do you know what happened to sharkey in his marathon? I looked up the results today but couldn't find his name anywhere. I can hardly imagine him DNFing unless he got injured or something. He has crawled in from much longer trail races in his day.

yeah he got some sort of 24hr bug he said and was too sick to run. he was kind of disappointed. I also found a great picture of us finishing the marathon. it so looks like you're trying to put the lunge in there!

A 24hr bug!? A likely story... but a bit too convenient in my opinion. J/k I totally had a GI bug earlier this year and I missed 2 days of running. Fortunately I also lost 5 lb which I managed to keep off so all in all it probably helped me. My room mate lost 40-50lb over the summer without trying and so the doctors think he either has a parasite or diabetes (because his fasting blood glucose is slightly elevated-to the level of pre-diabetes). Of course it makes me think I should start doing trail runs without bringing water and just drink from the creeks lol. Giardia sounds like the best parasite to have during base training. Some diarrhea, a little anemia. I get runners trots all the time anyway and the anemia is pretty much like blood doping when you get the problem fixed because your body is used to running with less blood. Of course im not actually gonna do that, but thats how desperate I am to lose weight.

Henry is not a problem in the 5k, but he might be in the mile--he ran an 18:24 last weekend. He has just a tiny bit more all out speed than I do. But he has been running only 30-40 miles per week and that even inconsistently. But I have got him up to 50mpw right now and fairly consistent. I keep sending him once a runner quotes that he goes nuts over, its awesome. If he keeps it up he will make huge improvements in the spring.

training in the winter is going to be difficult and take much discipline. it's dark before and after work so the headlamp will have to come out and it's so cold when the sun isn't out. maybe i'll have to run during lunch and just run faster to get more miles in during a shorter time. not looking forward to it. i need to finish top 5 at mt mitchell though to be happy. i need to do 70 per week to do that i think. what's your training plan look like for the winter?

good luck tomorrow!

Around 70mpw but with doubles and not many runs being very long. I'll do a 12-16miler on the weekend, then 4 or 5 in the mornings and 5 or 6 in the evenings most days. Although I know I shouldn't I will probably keep doing workouts twice/week and do some indoor track meets. I figure that when I need a rest I will get sick of running and do it naturally. Taking time off is too hard for me lol. If I feel like im doing too much I won't double. Winter is the best time of the year for training for me. I don't mind running in the dark (although trails are out in the dark without a headlamp). I will probably have people to run with for more than half of my runs so that will make it even easier. You will do fine. You don't necessarily need 70mpw. Think about how much you want to run each week and try to work your schedule to make that happen. With the doubles I could easily hit 80+ miles if I felt like it. But we will see, this week I was perfectly content just running once per day on non workout days.
