Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

p.m. 3 miles easy along the canal with Grace - well, not quite...

Decided to wait until Grace finished school so I could run with her. The plan was to do 4 easy miles along the canal in the afternoon sunshine. Someday I'll understand women.

After Saturday's race the three lay-days went to the hairdressers for the works. They came back looking the dogs. Great. But today when we set out to run along the canal, Grace was complaining about her hair. Not that it was getting messy etc, but that it was flapping about and going in her eyes - women, what are they like? She got all mardy and wouldn't run with me. She ran 10 metres behind me the whole way - until I decided to speed up a bit:) I cut the run short to a 3 as I knew she'd be in a stinking mood.

When we got back to the car, the gaffa gave out to me for not running with Grace. I kept stumm: if this life has taught me one thing, it's that you should zip it when the old lady's giving out to you about the kids.

It's tough being me.

Your approach in returning to running is well though-out and wise. I'll bet it will work.

I feel your pain, you made a wise decions. I have 2 daughters too. If it wasn't for my leg hair, there'd be no male presence in the house at all.

Britta - I'm in year two and I'm in trouble already! After spending 15-16 months building up, I was ready to start and then I over did it and ended up injured in January. The injury is sorted now and it will be the end of March before I start training properly - I'm just getting back into it and trying to shed a few pounds at the moment. But the main goal remains...

Kam - serenity rules:)

Matt - the injury is sorted:) I'm just being careful as I begin to build back up again - don't want any more mishaps or setbacks.

Joe - living in a house full of women is tough. If I were to shave my legs, I fear I'd end up like Samson:)Equal rights for men!

It will be fun to follow your progress. Sorry to hear about the injury. Hoping for good things for you this year!!!

Thanks Britta - that's very kind of you. I'm itching to get at it...
