I've never worn compression socks.

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

 

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 6 miles easy - out and backalong the canal. Legs felt pretty beat up.

Plan to start adding a bit of seasoning to the training - nothing to spicy, just a peppering of sea salt.

Re:your beat up legs, look at your weekly mileage graph for 2013. You went from 80+ to not much for multiple weeks, and now moving back up. Your mind needs to adjust accordingly. 41 miles in a week is a lot for most people. I'm guessing the last time you built up mileage you eased into it a little slower than you are now? Just trying to help your perspective as you do for many of us so often. I appreciate your help.

You're bang on Russ. I built up slowly: increased the miles every three weeks or so. And, I only ran for 6 days this week.

It's odd, 41 miles feels harder than 100. Also, I suspect the plague took a good bit out of me too.

I have no intention of running anywhere near the same mileage as I was before I got injured - I think mileage is overrated. You need to get in a decent amount of miles and if possible doubles, but miles for the sake of miles is pure stupidity.

The focus will be on a 6 tier pace system -1500m/3k/5k/10k/LT/AT(starting in July) over a 3 week cycle, plus weekly hill blasts and short doubles for recovery days/runs.

Thanks for your thoughts - I was trying to get my head round why I felt so beat up. I thought, for a moment, that decriptudenocity had gripped me.

One of your recent goals was to run on soft surfaces, so is your canal route that? Good clues from Russ, too; I highly doubt senescence is your worry. :-)

Neasts, I had to look up senescence; what a great word - I've forgotten what it means:)

There's a compacted grass/mud path that runs alongside a gravel towpath. So I'm staying on soft surfaces. Luckily, the view is great.
