Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 6 miles easy. Felt sluggish but it was good to get back out there. A bit of tendonitis lingering but hopefully it will go away if I take it easy for a few days and continue to ice and take NSAID's.

p.m. 3.5 miles proper European hardcore X/Country with Grace.

Grace had a frump-on because she was told to stop going on her multipad to skype all her mates. It's like having all her friends living with us. So, to sort her out I took her out along the North Kerry Way through fields and muck and over fences and walls and stiles. Great fun. She ended up clattered in mud and ran 3.5 miles with the last half mile uphill.

The leg niggled but I think it'll be ok in a day or two.

Skinny man running! Great picture of you and your girls.

Skinny man running - I like that. Grace will go nuts when she sees the picture: she looks so miserable and her face in burnt from the sun. I'll have to get a picture of me running in a race. Planning to start racing in March...

Glad to see you're back after your hiatus. Lots of stretching for the ITB and TFL. There are triggers along the band and if you press them and hold for 60-90 secs they release and loosen the band. Worth trying.

There are some great exercises for the TFL and ITB that work really well and quickly. They only take a minute to get done, which helps. I'll dig them out for you.

I like that... "proper" euro XC :-)

It sounds brutal

You are definitely a lean machine Bam. And what a great parenting tactic -- taking your daughter out on a XC run when she is frustrated. I'll have to steal that tactic.

It was fun for me and brutal for her. "Look at me,'she said. 'Mom's gonna kill me.' Mom wasn't too happy but it was worth it.

I've a few pounds to shed yet. My weight's been around 133lbs for a good while. But I think when I start working harder that it'll drop into the high 120's. I was 133lbs in my late teens - but a lot more muscular, especially in the arms.

Grace is training 3 times a week at the moment. Twice with me and once with the athletics club. At the club they do drills and sprinting and technique stuff. I'm just developing her endurance - on soft surface.

Great stuff Bam!

Bam, it's cool to see a picture of the mystery runner from over seas. I also really like that parenting tactic--there you go again leading the way: first you put my training methods to shame, and then you raise the bar with super-nanny-like parenting skills.

Hope the niggle works it way out soon--pesky things, niggles.

Thanks Scott. Don't know how I put your training to shame but the X/Country parenting skill was more fluke than design. The poor kid'll be scarred for life, well, maybe at least until tomorrow when she hits the beach to do some strides.
