Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 5 miles easy.

Got up and read all the race reports (considering the conditions, there were some sterling performances in the SLC 10K - aka The Battle Of The Sleeves -  and the pictures were great). I looked out the window and realised how lucky I am to live in a country where the climate is temperate.

Planned to do an easy 6 but after 5 I decided to stop and walk the final mile. Nothing serious but my right achilles and the right side of my body just felt out of sync. Played it safe. I fear this little niggle may plague me a wee while longer...

I'm reading your post after finally settling down with my first cup of coffee after my latest round of snow shoveling. Of course my neighbors are out of town so I had to shovel their walk as well.

Seems like we used to have a temperate climate but now it's nothing but extremes. Last winter was one of the warmest and driest on record. This year, just the opposite.

Nice run. Did you see Jake's reference to his achilles sleeve thingy he bought?

I remember a couple of years back when we had some snow (a few inches) and the whole country came to a halt - something about salt supplies.

Loads of people here emigrate to the States and some of those that come back bring with them many great ideas. One of which was why don't we make it law that individuals have to shovel the snow away from that's on their footpaths. Never took off - the idea of going out in the cold with a shovel wasn't a great way for the politicians to get votes. So, if snows, we just wait until it melts:)

I saw Jake's report and reference to his achilles sleeve thingy. I liked allie's comment about spraying it orange!

The weather at the race looked brutal. I've noticed that you're stringing together a good few runs. Have you got any plans for a marathon this year or are you just going with the flow?

Oh yeah, I'm sure Jake mentioned the British Milers Site to you. Well, there's another one you might be interested in: Athletics Weekly - a great weekly mag from the UK. They have an excellent section on the site about coaching. Worth a gander if you can find the time.

You can occasionally find Athletics Weekly on good newsstands here.

Every place is different here. In Salt Lake they won't fine you for not clearing your walk unless someone complains. However, I lived one winter in Minneapolis and it seemed like the city would be by issuing citations an hour after the last flake fell.

I think I may be done with marathons. This year my focus will be on the Gary Bjorklund Half in Minnesota in June. My 10k yesterday was about 2:30 slower than the same race last year but I'm making progress.
