Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

I believe the treadmill dissed me today.  I went down to the gym after getting my flu shot at our clinic and warmed up for a few minutes.  I had to get on one of the older treadmills since everyone takes the newer ones first.  No biggie, the programs are the same, the displays just aren't as nice.  So I punch in the 10k program thinking I'd just cruise on it at an 8:00 pace (7.5mph) and see if I can hold that for the whole program or see when I start to fall off.  Hit start and I'm cruising along just fine.  I get to the 1.16k 3% hill and decide to back it down to 7.2mph (8:25 pace or so) for the hill.  About 1k after the hill, the treadmill comes to a stop saying the program is complete.  What the heck??  I was at 5.80k and 30:00.  I think the treadmill kicked me off because I wasn't going fast enough.  Guess you have to be an elite to run on the older treadmills.  Guess I'll use the newer ones until next 2012.

So, I was then going to do the 5k program, but decided to challenge myself in a different way.  I cranked it up to 7.0mph and 3% incline.  Ran that for 8 min then backed it down to my Easy pace of 9:05 (6.6mph) and starting at 3%, each minute I increased the incline 1%.  I got to 9% before I decided I'd had enough and took it down to 2% and cooled down.  I think I'll do some more of those "hills," but extend the time or maybe bumping it up by 1/2% instead to get more mileage in.  1.5mi before I cooled down.

I'm working up my marathon training plan and trying to decide what paces to use since winter is coming and when running in the snow and ice, my paces slow down.  I guess I'll just be going by effort/time and then using the treadmill PRs to track my progress.  I prefer to run outside even if it's cold, slushy, icy, etc. but I don't mind the treadmill unless it's going to limit me to 30 minute workouts.  (The gym does have signs saying there are 30 min limits during peak hours, but I was there after 3:30pm which isn't peak.  Unless they changed the machines, they've never limited me to 30 min any time of the day.  As long as there's an open treadmill, I don't have a problem finishing my workout even if I'll be on there for 60+ min during peak hours.  That's just the kind of guy I am.)

THEN, I get home from work and my daughter, who thinks that my laptop is hers, has decided to surprise me with a little change to my desktop.  She designed it herself and is very proud of it (I didn't specifically say that she created it herself using Photoshop on FB and heard about it later).  She loves the song and she loves to torture me with it every morning on the way to seminary.  Anyways, here's a picture of my desktop - professionally designed by Annalee.  Copies of the background image are available for $0.99.

lol! Props to your daughter. (nice workout too) That "hide yo kids" song/video is the funniest youtube hit of all time.

Wow, you did get dissed by the TM. Or served, not sure which. Pretty funny prank job by Annalee, I like it!

I wonder if he ever did find him. You know, they're looking for him. "We gonna find you. You can run and tell that, homeboy."

That is quite the desktop. I actually had to go watch that on youtube after peaks comment, I never saw it before. That sucks about the treadmill giving you a problem. How is the planning coming for the marathon? I don't know if I told you this but my sole plan with the marathon is to get you qualified for Boston (and to get me my first finish) so you need to share your plan with me.

Peaks - it is funny, but it gets old after the 1,000 time. lol

Joe - Yeah, maybe I was served....or may pwned. One of those words. I'm not telling her you liked it or she'll think of yet more ways to torture me.

Burt - as of yesterday, no. With all the fingerprints, t-shirt and her having his smell, I can't imagine why they haven't. He's just a "idiot from the projects," so he should be easy to find...or maybe not. Of course, they're probably not to worried about it now that they're out of the projects.

Steve - um, yeah...I don't know what you're smokin up there, but I suppose you want me to beat the 3:10 win from last year and win the thing too, right? How about we just pick the time that will get us BOTH our first finish AND BQs and call it good? :-)

I haven't seen this youtube video so i guess I better go check it out. I think you got owned by the treadmill. Winter running is definitely unpredictable. I am trying to train for Houston in January so I will be incorporating some treadmill for sure. I've also found that in extreme colder temps minus snow and ice it is still hard to hit faster paces because my muscles just never reach that warm, elasticky phase and I'm wearing so much clothing.

From Steve on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 09:55:07 from 159.240.11.254

I was saying that I want to get you qualified for Boston, and that I would run at your pace with you to help accomplish that. I don't expect me to finish in 3:10, but if we could get you under 3:20 that would be geat!

From baldnspicy on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 11:53:36 from 167.164.3.140

Yeah, I was definitely owned by the treadmill, April. I'll be having a frank discussion with Frank today when I head down to the gym. As for clothing, I find I run the fastest when I'm naked. Maybe it's just me.

Steve!! Sorry, buddy, I knew what you meant but had to give you a bit of a hard time. *I* was just saying that if we could get under 3:20, why not 3:10? :-D Just checked and that course isn't certified for Boston qualifying, but that's no biggie. If I can do it there (the little devil on my shoulder is telling me good luck but he sounds sarcastic) I can do it somewhere else. AND, if we can do it there, I say we both do another one later in the year or 2012 and go sub-3:10 so we both qualify at the same time! Woot!

Thanks for the support, Steve, and I appreciate your willingness to run my pace. I hope to be fast enough that we're both running a very comfortable, fast pace and can support each other through those tough miles. Now if I can just figure out how to drink from cups while running and try some Gus to see if I even like them.... So much to do before May! :-D

That isn't fair, I am the one giving people the hard time. Yeah I was wondering about that, I didn't think so but I imagine you are right if we do one, we can do another. The one I did the relay this weekend for was actually top ten fastest for qualifying. The woman who won qualified for Boston and for the Olympic Trials. I don't think I am that good but it definitely was a quick race. I am excited to think that I would have someone to run with during a race, it makes everything so much easier. Maybe we should get you a Camelbak so that you can drink on the run. The way I do it is slow down some pour in your mouth and the rest on your head. I saw that a 3:20 pace is about 7:38 or so, so that should be a nice comfortable pace!!!

From flatlander on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 17:01:44 from 198.207.244.102

I think you are getting set for some major improvement again next year. Can't wait to see your program. Sorry about the treadmill, but I hate them anyway.

From baldnspicy on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 22:30:56 from 72.77.68.219

Steve - 7:38 is doable for me for a few miles. It ain't no walk in the park, but might be doable next year. I need to hit a 1:35 or so for the March half, so I've got some work to do! This one will be our dry run for the fall BQ attempt.

Thanks Flat. I, too, think I'm primed for some good progress if I can get through the winter healthy. I should have my plan formed by next week.

No worries about the treadmill. I found out that there are two older treadmills that are programmed to cut off at 30 mins if you're doing a program like I was. If you just start it and adjust from there, it will go for 90 mins before shutting down. So if I'm doing a program, I'll be on the newer machines.

After my run outside, I hopped on the treadmill I was on yesterday and we made peace during my 5 min cool down walk. haha
