June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

Just went on a 3 mile out and back without the Garmin.  Ran it in 31 mins out and 29 mins back.  That included two stops on the way out and one on the way back adjusting lacings as I was playing with different lacing to see if it would help some with the foot pain.  Not sure yet, but it may help...

Oh, my first 6 run week and I think my first 30+ mpw!

Way to go hitting 6 days! I've been too paranoid about re-injury to do that lately, but it is the best way to increase your aerobic fitness. My performance really took off last year when I was doing 6 days a week.

Lacing tightness can make a huge difference in foot comfort/pain/numbness. I wear mine just loose enough that I can barely slip them on and off without untying them. I've only adjusted the laces two or three times on my black 2130's in 980 miles. I usually don't keep shoes for that long, but they were so good to me I didn't want to give them up.

Thanks! I was just planning on 5 days this week, but Friday was unexpected. LOL At least I was smiling the whole way to the car. So, that day wasn't much for mileage, but I ran so it counts. I was actually sore a little that night and the next day...I didn't stretch and so that's probably why.

I'm going to try and do 6 days again this week. I should be able to keep a 30 mpw as well, but I was starting to feel the mileage a little at the end of the week so I'll probably keep it close to 30 for a couple of weeks until my body catches up and gets used to the mileage and, probably more likely, the increased days.

I was going to ask you if you actually had put almost 1k miles on those shoes or whether it was split between 2-3 pairs. That's amazing to me that they've held up that well. I started to tie my shoes looser as well as not lacing the bottom set of holes. It allows my toe box to be a little more roomy. In reading about my foot problems, tight toe boxes, compression/technical socks that squeeze the toes, all contribute to neuroma pain. I'll have to try lacing them that loose. I loosed mine up and removed the lacing from the top holes as well (by the ankle) which helped with the numbness too. I'll have to try mine that loose and see how that goes.

Thanks for the tips, Mike!

Nice week. I always feel like a big shot when I hit milestones like that, since it seemed like it would never happen prior.

It's just so funny because there are so many runners that do 2-3x that. Shoot, some bloggers do my weekly mileage in a single race...and more! LOL

Bah, we just started less than a year ago. But I know what you mean - it's always going to be a losing battle comparing yourself with some of these aerobic monsters. You're still running more than 99.9% of the country.

I think that's a good plan to stick with 30s for a few weeks. Somewhere around 35 mpw I started getting runner's knee, probably bc I kept increasing without waiting for my body to catch up like you said. But holding back is always easier said than done...

I have decided to trade in my shoes when I trade in my cars. In about 3 years. (My kids hate me.) Until the soles have holes, they're good to go.

I had issues with the toe box when I tried New Balance shoes. I'm sure they make good shoes but everyones feet are a little different. You might want to try another brand and see what happens. I tried almost all of them before I finally settled on Asics.

So the "rule" of retiring shoes at 400-500 or so miles is pretty much bogus? Interesting...I haven't had any shoes get to that mileage yet, so I wasn't sure.

Mike, I tried Asics, Mizuno, Brooks, and NB. I wear custom orthotics and so I was having a hard time getting my heel to stay in the shoe with the others. The toe box, I think is fine, it is the way I was lacing them. I was tightening it too much at the top which was putting pressure on the ankle, which I think was what was restricting some blood flow. Nothing major, but enough to cause a little numbness. I'll be running tonight and I'm going to loosen them even more to see, but taking out that top lace really helped. I had tied it up that high when I first got the shoes to keep the heel down, but now that they've broken in, the orthotics sit a little lower and it's no problem. Probably would have been the same story with any of the others, but I was too new to buying shoes like that and too sensitive to a little heel slippage. Live and learn!

I really do like the NB 758s though. They have great tread for both road and trail, which I like. They look cool, which is good, but I really like the way they feel. I wasn't a huge fan of the Asics 2140s, but the Mizuno Waves were nice. Brooks were OK, don't remember which ones I tried of those. The really nice thing is that I could buy them, take them home for a run and return them if I didn't like them. After the 3rd time out to the running store, I was frustrated so I switched and went to another one. They were sooo much more attentive, let me run on the treadmill longer, had cameras, etc. so it made a big difference.

Sorry, I'm babbling again. lol

I usually do retire my shoes with 300-500 mile on them. More often than not I'll start getting blisters or weird pains around that time so I know it's time. This particular pair just never bothered me though so I kept running in them. Eventually I realized I'd need a new pair for the marathon so I bought some new ones and have about 80 miles on them already. My first run in them was 20 miles. We have a shoe store here called Fleet Feet that video tapes your feet on a treadmill to analyze your stride and help you pick the right type of shoes. The folks that run that store are awesome!
