In late 2008 I decided I needed to get in better shape and started running again.  I ran my first formal road race ever, a half marathon, in late 2009.

(unofficial) Track 1 Mile - 7:32 (4/24/2010)  6:56 (9/27/2010)

22:39 - Gatorade Steelers 5k on 09/04/2010

10k - 50:43 - Riverside Run on 04/10/2010

Half - 2:02:58 - Just a Short Run on 03/27/2010
1:51:47 - IKEA Montour Trail Half on 09/11/2010

Short-Term Running Goals:

2011 Races:

Sept 25 - The Great Race 10k (59:15)
Nov 5 - Dirt Monster 5mi (52:59)

2012 Races:

June 8 - Riverside 5k  (27:49)
Sept 2 - Gatorade Steelers 5k (route) with Steve!  (27:39)
Sept 30 - The Great Race 10k (route)  (53:48)
Nov 3 - The Dirt Monster 5mi (52:55)

2013 Races:

May - Pittsburgh Marathon (started, but DNF about the half way point)
June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

Finally got to sleep just before midnight so I got a good 5 hrs before getting up to take my daughter to seminary.  I'm still tired, but functioning today.

Went to the podiatrist today and we had a nice discussion about my options.  Part of my late night last night was doing my internet research on my neuroma options, etc.  I went in thinking that the alcohol based injections were the next step but after talking with her (Dr. McFeaters - yes, that's her real name, lol), we decided to do the cortizone shots today (OUCH) and since I've met my deductible for my insurance, we're ordering up some new orthotics.  I talked her through my analysis of the orthotics, the wear patterns, etc. and what I thought I needed based on what I've read and she agreed with a couple of suggestions of her own.  So, I think the orthotics I get next will be a lot more helpful in keeping the neuromas at bay as well as helping the pain I get under my big toe (right, usually) from the nerve becoming irritated.  She also agreed to switch the top cover of the orthotic since it wore through so quickly.  She had ordered that one since it has it's own padding built in but I think we'll go with something a little more durable this time.

She also wrote me up a script for some physical therapy.  With our on-site clinic at work, the PT will be free (no copays), so I figured I'd give it a shot and see if it helps.  There was no way I was going to be able to afford paying $30 two-three times per week for a month or more.  Who said running was a cheap sport?  lol

Anyways, it's been a few hours now and the cortizone is doing it's job as it always does.  Unfortunately, it only lasts for a month or two before I'm feeling the pain again.  She said that generally, if someone needs the cortizone shots more than 3x/yr that means that they're not lasting long enough and other options need to be considered.  Neuromas are tough buggers to crack and may not go away permanently.  But, with some new orthotics and some PT, I hope to get rid of them enough that I can continue increasing my mileage and be able to run marathon distances without having them bother me or stop me from running...especially during a race like it did during the JASR.

It's surprising how many people deal with neuromas.  They are mostly women so maybe RT and I have girly feet.  Mine are dainty, I will admit.  I hope this non-invasive route works for me.  From what I read about the alcohol injections, although they have a pretty high long-term success rate, they also seem to sideline you for several days to weeks after each round due to swelling and pain.  Typically 4+ rounds are required with 7-10 days between rounds.  So, that would have meant I'd be dealing with that as I approach the Dirt Monster.

Ok, I'm going to be like Joe and I'm not going to complain about my feet any longer.  If this route doesn't "fix" me, though, I reserve the right to start complaining again but not until I've given this a fair shot.  :-)

Women get more neuromas from cramming their feet into their "cute" little shoes. Although, I guess that doesn't mean we can't have girly feet too. I'm a very petite size 12 after all :)

Hopefully the shots and new orthotics will do the trick for you. If I make it through Boston I'm getting mine cut out as soon as I get home. Shoulder and foot surgery in the same week; doesn't that sound fun? Maybe I can get a multiple service discount.

Funny post. I feel like I have dainty feet too, high arches. Hope the shot lasts longer for you this time, and the new orthotics and PT will give you some long-term relief.

Also, I think it is the God-given right of runners to complain about their injuries. It actually helps me think about what I want to do sometimes to type it out, because sometimes what I want to do sounds stupid when I read it out loud. But sounds like you're going at it the smart way, good luck!

Not sure how size 12 feet are dainty unless they're AAA width. Mine are 9 1/2, normal width. I wear running shoes most of the time at work and dress shoes only when the boss is coming around. The last pair I bought was over a year ago and they look almost brand new.

You'll have to let me know how the surgery goes. I'm not ruling it out, just trying to exercise all my options since my journey to BQ won't end in 2011...most likely, so taking the time off isn't appealing.

Joe - I didn't take you for a dainty footer being all tough military dude and stuff. Is there a "don't ask don't tell" policy for dainty feet?

There WAS...shhhhh don't tell!

I won't tell, but now the AP knows. They'll be contacting you.

I was told I have to be more positive and not have my demotivational quote, so I've edited my entry today to include the "Best Motivation Video Ever." Enjoy!

Great video and very true, unfortunately. Nothing like making a mistake to steepen the learning curve.

Ok don't think I am a total weirdo, but last night I had a dream that you and my wife became running partners. You guys would do long runs and then you would have her over to your place for wine. AHAHAHA! Somehow in the dream I was totally ok with all of this too. :) Yeah that was random.

From baldnspicy on Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 23:06:24 from 72.77.120.222

Flat - I think it's interesting that these people all were told they couldn't do something before they did it. Next time someone tells you you can't do something, feel free to go home and cry about it (Michael Jordan) and then go do it anyways. That's how winners are made.

Scott - you crack me up! I have very similar dreams only they're more like nightmares. I'm running my best race ever and with about 100m left, this woman flies past me like I'm standing still. I glance over and realize I just got chicked...by your wife...happens every time. BTW, she looks at me as she passes with the same face she has in the last photo of your Summer Fun 2010 album. Talk about adding insult to injury! Hahaha
