Cold run along the Bonneville Shoreline trail and then to the gym for some lifting.  I just got my permits today from the Costa Rican Forest Service for Cerro Chaco so I'm heading down tonight for the next four days for some serious trail running.  This will probably mean sleeping in a Jeep a few nights.  Good news is I was able to pick up the flight down so I'll be "at work" getting paid.  Can't complain about that.

I headed out today into the Talamanca mountain range South of San Jose, Costa Rica.  I've been trying to get to the highest peak and have failed twice.  Today was the third time.  It's along run to get to the mountain and the problem is just bushwacking your way up this sucker as you run.  I hit a few 15 minute miles going up and down this today and my heart rate was maxed doing that.  The trail I've found up just gets so overgrown that you would need a machete to get any further up.  Today I had ran out of water and already was showing over 10 miles on the GPS so I had to turn around.  Really hot day today, 85 degrees.  Lack of enough water did me in on this run.  Looking at the GPS track back at the hotel I could see that I was pretty close to making it this time. :-)  This run gains 3,000 feet.  Tomorrow, if I can drive halfway down Costa Rica and back, I'll try and do Cerro Chirropo.

On a separate note, pretty frustrating today to be at probably the worst shape in the last two years.  10 pounds of lazy fat is no fun hauling around and you really notice it on these long trail days.

I got up early today to head down south to run the Cerro Chirropo trail, highest in Costa Rica, but when I looked at Satellite weather pics there was a lot of clouds already forming there and I really didn't want to drive three hours to do a long run in the rain, in the rainforest.  So I decided to run the mountain trail that I had done yesterday and try again to reach the top.  I was much stronger today and it was cooler so by the time I got to the trail (4 miles) I felt pretty good.  But this mountain gains 4,000 feet quick and it really kicks your butt.  Today I actually found a trail though, marked by red arrows on rocks every now and then so I was able to make some time.  Then I lost the trail about mile 9 and was heading up a riverbed and climbing ridges whenever I could find them.  it was pretty cool to be running in so many different levels on the trail; rainforest, pine forest, fern and plant covered trails.  I had a Go Pro camera so I finally got some video of the trail running here and I'll post a link to some of the video.

This run was long, six hours.  Pretty much the limit of my endurance with only a package of oreos in my pocket.  I went through four water bottles going up and was able to grab two more at a little store in the first city going down.

Easy neighborhood run in Logan.  Pretty stiff today and legs covered in insect bites and scratches from the last two days.  But otherwise I feel like it's time to get running again, the plantar stuff seems to be doing fine.

The kids begged me yesterday to do a pajama breakfast at Angies, our fav breakfast place here, so we spent 2 hours there today.  Lots of fun and good to have a Saturday with nothing going on.  We then went to the gym and they went swimming while I got  on the treadmill.  I just cannot stand treadmill running this year and had to quit after 4 miles and join the kids.  I did get out again in the afternoon for another 7 in the snow.
