I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Gusty wind, spitting rain, warmish at 6:30am.  Ran longer than I thought I would, and hillier also.  I went on a usual trail, and cut off to Big Rock Park for an adventure.  It was a great trail, and one that I have never followed all the way through.  I didn't realize that I could follow it through and create a nice loop back to the road.  Fun run, splits all between 8:45 and 9:00, except for the one loooong steep uphill.

Track workout in cold rain and strong winds.  Bizarre!  Two mile warm up to get to the track, then 8X400s at something between 5K and mile pace, with 400 in between, then 2 mile jog back to the car.  Didn't really look at times on the fast 400s, it was too dark and rainy to mess around with Garmin.  They were fast.  Slow laps were slow.

This morning my knee hurts and I cannot walk, literally.  WTF.

JD, WTF stands for #$%@#!! of course.

No miles, knee pain is a probably miniscus tear; still can't walk properly.  The knee feels like it wants to buckle up and tip me over.  I'm doing some very simple leg lifts, trying to keep the muscles firing.  I'll see the Dr. again on Friday, and we'll assess whether or not I'll need pictures of the knee.  In the meantime, its been 24 hours with no running, and I'm doing OK. I can't ski tomorrow, opening day!  I am supposed to try the stationary bike this evening.

On the positive side, I tried melatonin as a sleep aid, and I think it worked.  Slept solid from 9:30 pm to 4am!   Then went back to sleep until 5am.  This is a record.  I am not at all certain that the combination of no exercise and lots of sleep is good for me.

Was able to walk better this morning.  I used the stationary bike for 20 minutes on the lowest resistance setting, just getting the knee to move smoothly.  Iced after.  I am pretty hopeful because it was better today.

More XC miles on the stationary bike, which has now been moved in front of my television!  I'm up to over an hour with no knee pain, and I'm able to activate all the muscles around the knee.  It is definitely a miniscus tear, but is healing very fast!  I have an MRI scheduled Monday, but maybe I won't need it if things keep progressing so quickly.  The dreaded prospect of surgery is fading.

Hoping to run one week from today!

PM - added a few more XC miles.  I've had the bike on the lowest resistance setting, and the knee is a tiny bit sore after the second session today.  I iced.  Still walking slowly, but the knee doesn't seem to want to "buckle" any more.  This all seems pretty good to me.
