I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Ordinary run; a few MP miles in the middle.  My focus was on form and breathing.  I tried to keep the easy miles at a two breath in two breath out effort; the MP miles 3 and 3.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I ran 1200m  barefoot during my track workout.  It felt great, and I really felt like I could have done all the track miles with no shoes.  I'll have to add a bare shoe to my blog; the miles are adding up!  It is really striking how natural the stride feels when barefoot.  Its actually effortless without trying to be effortless.

I've been drinking coconut water after my runs; it seems to be getting a lot of attention as a serious recovery beverage, and I thought I'd give it a try.  It is loaded with pottasium, magnesium and calcium, as well a many other nutrients, antioxidants, aminoacids, and enzymes.

Oooh, I've wanted to try that coconut water, but it sounds expensive.

So your breathing was slower (more steps per breath) during the MP miles than during the easy miles? My breathing gets faster (fewer steps per breath) when I run faster. Or is your MP slower than your easy pace?

I agree about going BF, it just feels so good. I do run MUCH slower BF at this point, which I attribute to a lack of that magical bouncy stuff, rubber. Makes shod running almost seem like cheating. lol

From auntieem on Wed, Sep 02, 2009 at 19:57:48 from 67.182.145.8

No, Carolyn, I'm not counting breaths per step, just breaths in and out. I'm breathing deeper in MP miles, so I breath in 1-2-3, while Easy miles I breath in 1-2 and out 1-2. Does that make sense, or am I running backwards? Don't know if I am coordinated enough to count breaths per step - LOL! - I'd maybe trip or something.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Sep 02, 2009 at 21:56:41 from 24.8.167.243

So what do you mean when you say you breath in 1-2-3? Do you take three breaths in before breathing out or do you breathe in for the count of 3? Please enlighten me.

From april27 on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 09:07:10 from 99.188.251.180

LOL--this breathing thing is confusing! I tried to pay attention to what my breath was one day but i kept losing track.

Then I tried countign my steps to see if I was at 180 steps per minute...again I lost track--if you have an easier way please clue me in!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 09:36:34 from 24.8.167.243

I never try to count steps for a whole minute. I'll count steps for 15 seconds (watching my watch) and then multiply by 4. Or you could just try to get 3 steps per second. That comes out to 180.

From auntieem on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 11:24:56 from 67.182.145.8

OK, Carolyn, I actually paid more attention when I ran this morning, so I could explain! Breathing in to the count of 3, then out to the count of 3 is a moderately "working" pace for me. Breathing in and out to the count of 2 is "easy" pace for me. On all out strides, I'm moving my legs too fast and cannot think about breathing, except I know that I do it.

LOL - I'm trying to imagine taking three breaths in before breathing out!

From auntieem on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 11:25:32 from 67.182.145.8

Burt, yes the coconut water will get expensive if I drink it every day. Maybe I'll find a case deal at Costco or something.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 12:26:36 from 24.8.167.243

Okay. One more question about the breathing. Does the speed of your counting vary or is it constant? In other words, do you count more slowly when you're running easy.

From Burt on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 12:40:03 from 68.76.197.194

Grow a palm tree. Once you've climbed up to the top and picked a coconut, you will enter manhood.

From auntieem on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 14:03:16 from 67.182.145.8

Nope, I think my count is dead on. I'm curious now, though, to try steps per breath. I hope I don't come to a bad end on the trail from trying to do too many other things while running!

From auntieem on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 14:04:14 from 67.182.145.8

Burt - Promise? But with manhood would come a whole new set of running targets. I don't if I can take that on right now.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 14:04:29 from 198.241.217.15

Be careful out there! I don't want to be the catalyst for aforementioned bad end.
