AM-Easy 10 miles at 6:30-7/min pace with some stride outs at the end.  Last mile in 5:26.  Short hills tomorrow to open up stride mechanics.  7th and 13th out and back.

Going out to look for a job as I'm not working much at all lately. Sucks.. My miles are really piling up which is a good thing in a way however, it doesn't feel much harder than when I was running 50-60 mpw working graveyards and going to school.  Now I really understand when Bill Rodgers stated back in the 70s ;  " Anyone with a full time job is not going to beat me."   So true..  Often the race is not decided not just by the one with most talent, desire, or amount of work but by the one who had the most optimum environment to recover and thrive in.  I truly believe that for the most part.

I'm not jealous right?

PM-Easy 6 miles at 7-8/min pace.  7th east out and back.

That's true, but I think I would get bored if I did not work. I usually work 50 hrs/week, but fortunately it's all sitting down at a computer. Bad for posture, but good for energy.

Steve - answering over on yours (because I often ask a question and then forget to look back at what their answer was!).

So for Des News, I am running the 10K. I surely don't have much of a 10K race in me, but I want/need a race and don't want to kill myself with Des News.

I am planning on running the Salt Lake Half though in early Sept. And from what I can tell it seems to be part of the Des News marathon course - Have you ran it, or anyone else who can tell me something?

Dave, Salt Lake half I know nothing about sorry bud. Des News 10k; You will love the first 4 miles and after that it's all about just hanging on at a steady effort till the finish.

If you are a good downhill runner you'll want to really try to hit at least a 4:50/mile pace or under for those first 2 miles and then adjust accordingly to perception of effort by backing off a bit. This is in order to regroup for the last part of the race which is the tough part of course.. Just my opinion though.. If memory serves me correctly I have a 31:57 PR from years ago with that pacing strategy. You may do better though.

Paul, I know, plus and minuses right? I think the mental exhaustion of 50 hours a week would be tough for sure.

I think the ideal position for a runner trying to make it would be like the deal some of the Kenyan runners have in Japan on the corporate teams. They work at a relatively low stress part time job. But you know it takes that, I'm sure if they put them to work making Toyota cars 10 hrs a day they wouldn't be running sub 13 min 5ks LOL!

I've been looking for work and still batting zero! Just saying you might honestly look and not get anywhere.

Yeah, I know.. I used to live in Omaha back in 1999 and back there and then all you had to do was ask for a job and someone would say; When can you start?

I know that things have really changed even back in the midwest now. What kind of job are you looking for?

From Bob on Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 21:43:25 from 65.101.164.200

Steve. I'm looking for something related to securities analysis or corporate finance, but I'm getting to the point of just starting at ground zero somewhere completely different (i.e. Target, etc.) until things turn around. How about you? After seeing the recent Wells Fargo lay-off news, it looks like late 2011 until things improve. Then again, some claim employment levels will not return to the levels pre-recession for 2-3 more years. I wish you well in your search.

Steve, So true about the work. It is amazing how physically exhausted I can get some days simply from sitting at a bench doing an experiment or in front of a computer reading papers...

Dave, I like Salt Lake Half but maybe because it was one of my first overall wins ('06). I do think it may be a little short. Check out my old race reports '07 and '08 for some details. The title of Steve's blog today is fitting for this race...
