I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to running on Sunday.  On the one hand it is the "day of rest" for folks in my religion.   What constitutes a day of rest though?   I have never seen easy running as more exertive than a Sunday walk is for most.  It is a in a big way a great stress relief and renewal for me.   Isn't that acceptable?   I hate to rationalize this but where do we draw the line between the spirit of the law and the letter of the law?   Back in ancient Israel it was forbidden to even prepare one's food on the sabbath!

There came afterwards the higher law of the Savior which superceded all others and in essence embraced the spirit of the law.  So somehow I just don't think you can be condemned for appropriately engaging in activities that are wholesome in nature and do not interfere with the atmosphere of the Sabbath day.    I don't know, everyone has a different take on this issue.  In the meantime with my schedule the way it is it is just virtually impossible to get into higher mileage without compromising recovery.    I guess in the end it's all about where it lies in your own personal relationship with the Lord.

I think that you are exactly right Steve. There is nothing more relaxing than a easy run. To be honest, its a great time to meditate on spirtitual things. At least for me. But if violates ones conscience....He or she shouldnt do it.Just my opinion.

I too have debated about running on Sunday. I have went back and forth on it but I think I have finally settled that I will run if it doesn't take away from family time or spiritual time during the day. For me it is more relaxing taking an easy run than sitting in front of the TV for an hour. If I have the time and it works out I will go out but I treat it different than the other days of the week because if I don't get out I don't stress out about it. I think your right though this is one of those things that everyone has to work out for themself.

I've always felt that if a run or walk on the Sabbath leaves me a kinder and a nicer person than I would be without it and if I am not skipping church or family time to fit that run in - then it beats me staying at home, getting annoyed and ruining the spirit in my home for everyone.

Your last statement rings true, Steve. Personally, I don't run or race on Sunday, but we do take walks as a family. Ultimately, it is your choice as to what you feel comfortable with. Good luck with your training for Deseret News.

Air Darkhorse - clearing your mind, a sunday run, what can be more in touch with nature and the inner self?

It's great that you are dealing with this and searching for an answer. Check out Matt. 11:28, Matt. 12:28, Col. 2:16-17, and Heb. 4:9-10. Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath and you should find rest in Him every day!

From wheakory on Tue, May 12, 2009 at 16:57:26 from 134.50.89.33

It's not a sin to run on the Sabbath day. Jesus healed on the Sabbath Day and he was questioned by the Pharisees. If its something that takes away your importance from God than it's wrong, but this would be for any day. We can just set aside one day for God it's has to be everyday. Running needs to be balanced on Sunday just like it is on every other day.

Caffeine is samething it has to be balanced, but we won't go there.

Bible verses

Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy? ~Luke 6:9

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

I follow the rule that if you cannot do it while dressed for church, the activity is too strenuous for the Sabbath.
