Well, it's done and quite frankly it was the strangest race I have ever run. I just could not get into a groove during the first 20 miles. I don't know if it was something biological or something mental. I suspect it was probably a little of both. I started to feel better after mile 20 with the last three miles faster than the first three! I said a prayer to God and drank some Gatorade. As I progressed the pace slowly got faster, soon I was doing sub-6min miles by 23. Sasha came running up next to me and told me he was expecting an easier pace. I have to say that it was not easy for me either but things felt very different at this point. Soon a very sleek looking Kenyan runner looms into view... I start to have visions of 100 dollar bills with race numbers and singlets on! And oh my, then David Dantley. I thought this can not be happening... I start to run up on my toes and push ever harder and soon a soft din of the crowd starts to sing in my ears. I go into my little Prefontaine long kick mode and my lungs are just burning at this point. Soon the chute clock rushes up to me and then the switch just goes off, BAM! And just like that I drop over like a millstone at the bottom of the ocean. Thank you Lord for helping me at the end when I needed it most.

Thanks Salt Lake City for the cheers and thanks to my sponsor, MAXX properties who helped in so many ways. Sasha and Ted, thanks to you most of all for your expertise and friendship.

PM-Felt ok so I went for a nice 5 mile recovery run this afternoon and then spent the rest of the evening with my family.

Great Job Steve!

From Ruth on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 12:48:13

Great job! You ran a really strong run, I'm amazed at how you felt strong the whole way, I couldn't even imagine running that far that fast. You're amazing! 5th place is awesome, I mean, don't you get prize $ for it? Way cool. Keep up being great!

From ashman on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 12:55:49

I get money for it, to the tune of 500 clams. Hopefully soon.

From Brent on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 12:57:22

Wow, impressive, faster at the last three miles. It seems you have another great marathon race waiting to be run.

Congradulations.

From ashman on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 13:08:44

Thanks Brent, I did the best I could. I might be able to be ready for Ogden, But I need to see how my recovery turns out.

From James on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 13:35:46

Way to go Steve! Thanks for your own encouragement, and congrats on the marathon PR! Keep up the good work . . .

From Mike K on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 13:47:16

Great job Steve! Take some time and recover, you deserve it.

From Scott Browning on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 13:50:08

Nice Job Steve, you stayed tough when it mattered most. I have said it before, this is just the start for you!!

Well Done!

Thanks Mike, I'm glad to hear from you. I hope you have a strong comeback. I hope we get run together again sometime.

From Mike K on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 14:20:44

That would be great but you'll have to slow down for me.

From Paul Petersen on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 14:24:02

Way to go Steve! Are you doing the 30K next week?

From Mike K on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 14:31:20

That would be great but you'll have to slow down for me.

Its ok, I just noticed that I misspelled David Danley as Dantley. OOps.

From James on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 17:49:07

Steve,

Good run! Good job at catching David Danley too. Did you get any bonus stuff for being the first local runner?

From Chad on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 17:58:13

Excellent race, Steve. I'm sure Rocky Balboa would be proud of you!

From ArmyRunner on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 18:19:33

Great job Steve and congrats on being in the money. You were able to run through whatever was the issue early on and finish strong. This race shows you have a lot more in you than this. I know it is only a matter of time before you truly have a breakthrough performance in the marathon. Don't jump back too fast too soon. Take this week as a true recovery week regardless of how you feel and then see how things feel after that. Enjoy a relaxing well deserved rest week!

From Superfly on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 18:50:56

Good job Steve. Way to dig deep in the end!

From ashman on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 19:15:14

Thanks you guys and no bonus but I was promised by Scott Kerr the $500 within thirty days. He said that all of the financial issues are behind them so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Rocky Balboa and I go way back even to his first movie when I was a kid so you gotta understand I'm a big Rocky fan. Ted, thanks again, I know that I have work on a couple of things, one of them being execution in the early stages of the race. But I did my best and it turned out pretty good so no complaints.

From Cody on Sun, Apr 22, 2007 at 22:49:25

All I can say is wow! Good Job! Soak it up and enjoy the feeling. I know I speak for many people who are impressed by your ability to run well and show us lesser-experienced runners how to excel. Consistent training and hard work has paid off...literally.

From James on Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 00:19:37

Steve,

It is nice to have Paul and our small and growing Logan crew to run with once in a while.

I am doing WBR again and we are glad that you are on the team, you will enjoy it. We have a good team and a fun bunch of guys to hang with.

Rocky 3 is my all-time favorite movie!

From Dave Holt on Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 09:38:16

Great job Steve! Well deserved pay day for you. I love how you were able to dig down deep at the end.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 13:27:32

Steve: Your last 5 K was 17:43! My last 5 K in the half was 17:55.

From wheakory on Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 02:28:40

Very impressive Steve! That last 5k time is impressive. I ran Salt Lake last year, and if I didn't run Boston this year I would have done Salt Lake. God supplies us with grace and strength when we need it.
