AM - A large group for the Sasha UHM. We had Michelle, Jamie, Tom and Daniel at the start. Daniel only ran for 1.5 miles and then turned back. The rest continued on for the whole adventure. It is nice to have a group like this to run with. The left knee felt a little better today after a day off yesterday which is a good sign. However, it is still bugging me and still hurts a good bit going up stairs and walking. So I will not do any faster stuff or tempo work until it feels better. I am glad that I can at least run on it with only minor issues that don't seem to be getting worse for now.

PM - Ok, I decieded to not run tonight as my left knee was hurting all day again today as I walked around and was especially noticable going up stairs again. I can run with minimial pain and was torn between going with James and Jared and not running. However, I guess I need to play it smart and see if not running tonight helps. I will stay home and start the ice and ibuprofin routine tonight and see how things feel tomorrow. As usual it is really hard for me not to go run when I know that I could if I really wanted to. I usually just run through most issues that come up but this one is making me a little more nervous than most so I better play it a little on the safe side for now.

I'll be up there Wednesday morning. I'll try and catch you and Sasha for a run.

Sounds good. We meet at Sasha's house early on WED's at 5:00am for a 10 mile run. I do not have Sasha's address off the top of my head but I'm sure he can provide.

It was great to run with you today, Ted. It's smart to play it conservative at this time of year. Better to get totally injury free and not meet your mileage goal.

Smart move... you know your own body and your limits. You'll be in my prayers. Get some rest.

Do you think it is chondromalacia (runner's knee) or something else? Rest, ice and anti-inflammatories are always a good start. I had chondromalacia the last two years at the end of the season and was able to get past it with the options mentioned above.

Hope your knee gets better soon.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Not sure what it is as I have not really experienced any real knee problems in the past. However, Chondromalicia does match some of the symptoms. Were you able to run through it or did you have to stop running all together? Like I said I can run on it and it with less pain than walking but the rest of the day it seems to really bother me especially going up stairs. By the morning it feels a little better again but then just gets worse throughout the day again. I am torn between trying to run through it or taking time off and how much time to take off if I do. I have a hard time taking time off as I really just want to get out and run and feel like I am being too cautious if I don't run. Any thoughts?

Your symptoms sound the same as what I had. My honest opinion, based on my experience is to keep up with the ibuprofen (and glucosomine helped), ice and stretch, and most importantly, a two fold approch of stopping/drastically reducing running for about a month and quad strengthening excercises. I focused on the strength stuff and did the elliptical hard for about a month to keep the cardio conditioning up. This seemed to do the trick and I reentered my running strong and more motivated. Also, I focused on ensuring my form was good (I think this is what caused the pain in the first place) to ensure my knee tracks properly and stops irritating the connective tissue under the kneecap.
