Ran from home to Georgetown, to Rosslyn and back on the Mt Vernon trail - coldish but nice. Sky was so pretty. Nice to have the day off. Last long run before the marathon... any tips for the two weeks taper? I'm really bad about tapering... need to read more about it...

Which marathon are you running?? Its coming up fast. Now is the time to work on your emotion and mental game. Start thinking about how your going to prepare for things that will happen on your race. About your goals and such.

There is a good article in this month's Runner's World about tapering authored by Ed Eyestone. Basics:

70% of high mileage 2 weeks out, 3-4 speed sessions

30% of high mileage week of marathon, 1-2 speed sessions.

The idea is to cut mileage but keep up some intensity during the taper to rest your body but keep fitness tuned up and make the MP feel comfortable.

Good luck!

My problem with tapering has always been the mental aspect of it. With a couple of weeks of reduced running, I have tons of extra time and energy (both physical and mental), and I just get antsy. I've never managed to effectively deal with the angst other than to simply wait it out, so when you come up with a good strategy, let me know!

Wow ... maybe I am just naturally lazy -- but I just did not have a hard time with tapering ;-). Mentally, I was worried about losing fitness, but physically, I was so tired from the training I was happy for the down time.

Greg doesn't advocate much of a taper - basically the same as Ed Eyestone (but I think my week leading up to the marathon was more like 50-55% of highest mileage. The two weeks before I still did some 1/2 marathon-marathon pace work, just shorter than usual (like 4-5 x 1000m @ 1/2 marathon pace) and some fartlek workouts to "keep the legs snappy".

Bonnie, Greg, and Ed Eyestone might be onto something with the no-taper idea. Some of my easiest-feeling (and even a few of my fastest) races (ranging from 5k to 50 miles) have been off of 70-100mile weeks. Hhhmmm...

Huans, I'm running Marine Corps on October 25.

Thanks for the tips - I guess "taper" refers mostly to no more really long runs... I like Jeff's and Bonnie's suggestions, I'll try a few speed workouts this week and take it easy next week. My legs tend to feel tired easily, so I don't think I'm like you, Nevels. I'm off (in between jobs) the week before the marathon, so I'll need to stay really focused so that I don't get mentally scared and so I don't eat too much...

Vamos Argentina! I did know we beat Uruguay, but I don't always follow it, so thanks for the note Lyman! I'm glad I'm not the only one in the blog rooting for the best team! ;)
