It was pretty humid out today.  I'm hoping the weather improves before the marathon!

Workout

1 mile MP (5:39... um not)

1 mile easy

1 mile MP (6:09... more like it)

I had a long talk with Jenny yesterday about race strategy.  We both agreed that we didn't know enough about me to know whta my training indicated for a goal pace, and that I should race based on feel.  I asked what sensations I should experience if racing the correct pace, she said I should be "slightly uncomfortable".  So my goal today was to experience those sensations during the run.  One glitch... I have very little experience "racing" anything longer than a 10k (and I've only done 3 of those).  So guess what happened on the first one?  I ran the first one at around 10k pace, "This is a little uncomfortable" Duh!  the second one was way way more reasonable.  I wish I had practiced this sensation a little more.  I am feeling my infantcy more acutely right now than ever!  I think my plan will be to set my timer on my watch for 6:10-6:12 pace at the beginning and reassess every 10k.  I am a little excited.  There is so much to gain and nothing to lose.  "Freedom is just another word for nothin' left to lose"... The late, great Janis Joplin!  I think based on long runs and training that is THE most reasonable plan!

Good Luck in your marathon! I hope you get good weather too!

I would describe marathon pacing as "incredibly easy" through at least the first 10 miles. "Slightly uncomfortable" doesn't begin until close to halfway. Everyone is different though. But in any case, I think you will be shocked at how easy it feels early on, so it's good that you've made a pre-set plan to reign in the horses if they neigh too loudly early on.

thanks Paul! THat is incredibly helpful! I have no idea what I can/will do on race day. I'm hoping my plan is conservative enough!

Unfortunately it looks like it's going to be warm race day... again this year, but I did all my training in the summer so I can still run well.

Yes, do what Paul says. If it feels hard during the first half, then it means you will probably bonk hard before the end.

Good luck!

If you're questioning your instincts I would K.I.S.S. with Jack Daniels and run 1/2M + ~20s... Best of Luck!

Thanks guys! 6:15 it is. for the first half! sounds conservative to me. We shall see!
