"Warmed up" with 2.25 easy miles then ran 3X1 miles at 5k Pace (6:00/mile) with 1/2 mile recovery.  A little longer recovery than usual because of the taper.  It seemed colder today than it has been the past couple of days and I could really feel the cold during the first repeat.  The first one came in at 5:58 and felt fine but not as comfortable as I had hoped.  Ran the recovery at just under 8:00/mile pace which was probably a little too fast.  Ran repeat #2 in 5:51 and it felt good.  Recovery was more reasonable at 8:40/mile.  The last one felt like the last mile of my 5k on Saturday.  Breathing was fine and the legs did not burn but I could not get them to turn over as quickly as I would have liked.  The last 0.2 was up an overpass and I was at exactly 6:00/mile pace before hitting it and finished at 6:02.  I thought I would feel a little stronger today.  Overall, it was a good run and did not beat me up too much. Finished with 1.75 cool down miles.

I'm starting to think about my goal for the marathon and do not think that I am in sub3 shape right now.  I wasn't able to do it 2 years ago when I was in better shape physically (although I was an emotional mess) and am afraid if I go for it again this year I will blow up at the end again.  I think that 3:03 (7:00/mile) is reasonable and will probably target that.

It's okay if you blow up in the end!!! (I'm a pro at it!!!)

I'm sure whatever you decide will be perfect -- no pressure!!! But ... really ... is blowing up at the end so bad if there is a chance you might not blow up and hit that sub3 afterall?

Think positively. Envision the race you want and then go for it. Why not?

Because I've blown up on this course the 2 previous times that I have run it and hate not having the energy to take advantage of the canyon. What will all of my adoring fans think of me if I crash and burn in another marathon?

I'll make a t-shirt that says ... Andy's #1 adoring fan -- blow ups and all!!!

(Don't you know that makes you more approachable, more human, more like the rest of us!!?? :))

Just run, Andy, run!!! You'll do great! :-)

From Kathie on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 13:13:33 from 63.248.105.188

Set three goals Andy Satisfied, Happy and thrilled that way if you blow up you can still met a goal and feel like you rocked the race.

Teena - Make me a shirt too, or a sign we can wear in the race!

Just run to the best of your ability and keep thinking positively.

You did it, your last VO2 max workout! EXCELLENT work! The hay is in the barn!

Why do you think you were in better shape two years ago physically? Your recent race performances dictate otherwise. Believe in yourself!!! Your adoring fans and harem love you unconditionally, sub-3 or not! I know you will run a smart race! GO FOR IT, Andy!!! :)

From Rhett on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 16:40:17 from 74.32.222.202

Based off your recent 5K, I'd say you are set to run a sub 3. You're a marathon veteran, you'll know what to do on race day based on how you are feeling. When I left the hotel room the morning of Boston, I told my wife I was feeling good and was going sub 3. I could just tell I was feeling it. I had the same feeling I had before the race at SGM 2008. Hopefully you'll be feeling it and you will know to run that sub 3 pace.

From Andy on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 17:44:04 from 159.212.71.69

If I run conservatively I will get a 3:03 and if I run aggressively and crash and burn I would end up with something around 3:05. Since they are basically the same time I may as well go for it.

That's the spirit Andy - GO FOR IT!

From jtshad on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 16:54:12 from 204.134.132.225

I agree with Kathie, set 3 goals: A - Sub 3:00, B - 3:03, C - 3:10. A is if everything goes perfectly, B is what you think your are realistically trained for, C is one that you would still be satisfied with.
