| Anne and I followed the hotel concierge's directions to a spot southwest of LV to run some trails in the foothills. We ended up on what I think were old wildcat mining roads. | 9.5 miles on the LV strip. I ran south past the airport on the old LV 1/2 marathon race course. Really, it's just HWY 604 running parallel to Interstate 15. It brought back a little nostalgia from when I ran it in the early 1990s. Two miles in the run and I was away from most of the casinos and was able to run on a dirt shoulder. After freezing my rear end off the last two days, I decided to run indoors to thaw out. It wasn't fun since it was my long day. Combined with the fact that I'm breaking down a little bit from the increase mileage, I wasn't very motivated today. It's funny that 50-60 miles seems like so much right now. I guess it's all relative. 15 years ago, 100 mile weeks were the steady diet. I might back off in a week or two to let my body rest up. No sense in overdoing it in the middle of the winter. My goal right now is to be a base monster and get down to fighting weight. I'm now under 170 pounds. When I started back in September, I was pushing close to 190 pounds. I'd like to get down to around 160 pounds by summer. I did have some nice company today. The Adjudant General of the Vermont National Guard, General Dubie happened to to be at the track so I ran and talked with him for a bit. He's a pretty pleasant fellow and he can keep a decent pace. He and his brother, the LT Governor have run the Vermont City Marathon relay together a few times. 12.5 miles. 1:40:12. 8:01/mi. 140BPM.

I took the day off. My right glut and upper calf/lower knee have been pretty sore lately. I think it may be due to a lack of traction when running outside. The constant slipping really affects my gait and causes me to keep my leg muscles tense all of the time. This was an unscheduled day off, but I needed it. I think this is a positive chapter in my running life. 15 years ago, my running OCD would have prevented such an act of weakness. I would have run through this and gambled a greater injury. Now, I realize that the day of complete rest will probably pay greater dividends than the one missed day of training (as long as I do not make this a habit). It's 7:00 in the evening and my leg feels much better already. I'll run indoors for the rest of the week and I'm not doing a long run this weekend as part of my scheduled light mileage week. I hope this little break will help me consolidate my gains over the last few months.

It was a crazy day today. I didn't get a chance to run. Between work and taking the kitty to the vet, I was swamped. I couldn't get to the indoor track and I think I'd rather have a root canal than use the dreadmill. Oh well, I'm supposed to be lightening up my mileage through the end of this week anyway. On a positive note, my legs feel great. I'll be ready to creep up to 60 MPW starting next week.

| Happy Valentines Day. This marks the end of my two weeks of light mileage to let my body recover from the past 4 or 5 months of coming back. 20 degrees and a light breeze. I was a little overdressed and had to strip off a few bits of gear to keep from overheating. It was an odd run because I was stopped no less than 4 times for directions or questions about stray dogs. This is the first time I've been interrupted during a run in a very long time (years), so 4 times was a bit unusual. The run went well, but I was very sluggish for the first 5 or 6 miles. Anne treated us to his and hers pedicures afterward. I passed on the nail polish, but got the "male nails" treatment instead. It was a nice treat and I think we'll do it again in the future. | An embarrassing streak of non-running days. We've had a small family emergency and thing's have been pretty stressful. The worst part is that I should use my running as a stress relief, but I didn't. I guess the good news is that most all of my foot and leg pains are gone. I got back on the wagon today with a shorter, easy run. I should probably take it easy for a few days and ease back into it. Nice day. 30 degrees and sunny, not much wind. | A running buddy of mine called me this morning. He's a pretty solid athlete, but he's had a bit of bad luck over the last couple of years. He's had both ACL's reconstructed. He's been pretty consistent through the winter and wants to start training together. This might be what I need. He ran the New Bedford Half last month in around 1:19, so he's fit but not out of my league. He wants me to run a low-key hilly 1/2 mary this weekend. I think I'll do it to jump start my training and motivate me to train a little more regularly. I went for a run right after I spoke with Loren. It turned into a tempo run. 8:48 miles total. Essex Loop. First mile or so easy and then I got into a decent rythm. total time: 59:30. 7:01/mi. 148 BPM. I think I can average 7:00s for the 1/2. It's a tough course. |

Rolling Irish Half Marathon. 13.11 miles. It’s a certified course; I had 13.17 on my Garmin. GPS error and tangents probably make up the .06 miles. This is a tough hilly course on mostly dirt roads. I haven’t been very consistent lately, so I wasn’t expecting a stellar time. In fact, this is the first ½ mary I’ve run since 1997. It was about 45 degrees, breezy and overcast.
Mile 1. 6:54. Flat and paved. Leaders are already gone; a couple of kids from some small college. I think they ran around 1:14 or so. Pretty quick for this course. I felt good. Loren hung back with me. He’s recovering from bronchitis and was hacking up some awful stuff.
Mile 2. 6:51. Dirt and rolling. Loren and I are still together.
Mile 3. 6:24. Pretty big downhill. It’s a loop course, so I’m already thinking about paying back this downhill later.
Mile 4. 7:09. Gradual uphill. This wasn’t too bad, but I know the tough stuff is not until miles 6 – 9. Loren took off. He ended up running 6:00s for the rest of the race. I think he finished 5th or 6th.
Mile 5. 5:53. Falling off a cliff. Who though 5:53 would be a screaming fast mile for me? Oh well, I’ll worry about that later. Time to get ready for the uphill.
Mile 6. 6:36. Leveled out and turned to pavement.
Mile 7. 7:49. Did I mention the hills yet? Brutal hills. At one point I ran a quarter in 2:30! Huffing and puffing and using my hands on my knees a little. I’m starting to pay for taking 3 or 4 days off each week over the last 2 months!
Mile 8. 7:35. We’re not out of the woods yet. I’m still paying my penance for taking too much time off. At least I had time in the bank from the downhills earlier. I’m still better than 7:00 pace.
Mile 9. 7:52. The worst yet! The course markers dished out a little bit of cruelty. They made a big chalk smiley face at the crest of a giant hill. I assumed it symbolized the end of the uphills. Wrong. I turned the corner and discovered more hills! What a heartbreak.
Mile 10. 6:39. Finally done with the big hills. Back to rollers. Unfortunately, I’ve developed a pretty bad stitch. I’ll deal with it. Only 3 to go.
Mile 11. 6:54. Rolling hills. My legs are feeling pretty dead by now.
Mile 12. 7:04. Still hanging on.
Mile 13. 6:41. Switched back to pavement. The stitch is really bad by now, but I can see the end.
.17 mi 1:10. I tried to look smooth across this line even though I know I am in shambles.
Total time: 1:31:32. 6:59/mi. for 13.11 miles. I think I was 12th or 13th. I’ll check online once the results are posted. That’s about where I figured I’d be. According to the course tool this is a 6:41 flat effort. I’ll take it. Loren and I are going to start meeting in the mornings a few days a week. I need the motivation, he needs the structure. He ran around 1:22 today while recovering from bronchitis. I hope to catch up to him if I can get out the door every day. |

| I was thinking about doing a small race this morning, but changed my mind. I think I could've hurt myself racing hard so close to last week's tough 1/2 mary. I've always used the formula- one day recovery for every mile raced. Well, at least no races for as many days; I think you can train hard again as long as you didn't completely flatten yourself in the race. I came close to flattening myself in the 1/2 mary due to my lack of training, so no races for a couple more weeks. Anne and I went to my sister-in-law's house for the afternoon. It's in farm country with lots of nice back roads to run on. My old nemesis the wind was there. 10.14 miles. 1:12:23. I picked it up on the way back with the wind at my back; a couple of 7:00 miles, a 6:50 and a 6:30 miles. Overall pace 7:08. 144 BPM. I'm starting to feel good again. |

There's nothing like wearing a full chemical suit for 10 hours a day to sap your energy. I decided to go a little shorter today and take a nap on the sofa this evening. Long easy run today. Lost Nation Road and Indian Brook Road plus a bit. I think this is my longest run since I was very serious about running back in the mid 1990's. I'm pretty pleased. However, in context of Holt's recent training, it's about 1/2 of one of his long days!
I was fine through about 15 miles. My legs started to get very sore over the last 2 miles and my HR started to creep; probably due to dehydration. I'm going to invest in a hydration belt for these 2 hour-plus runs. 17.26 miles. 2:08:54. 7:28/mi. 141 BPM. After reading a few marathon race performances (way to go Cody and Bonnie!), I started to think about my first marathon, the Tucson Mary in late 1994. I was in pretty good shape, but hadn't done may runs over 2 hours. I had recently run a couple 1:12s for the 1/2 marathon. I figured I could try to run with the big boys in the marathon. My training partner at the time (a 2:25 marathoner) cautioned me to take it easy and predicted a 2:45 marathon. When the race started, I felt great and went with the second pack, averaging around 5:45s. I was feeling great through 18 or 19 miles, on pace for about 2:30. I though I had a super fast first marathon in the bag. I realized my miscalculation soon after a late race water stop. I slowed down for fluids and never sped back up. The wheels fell off the bus and I went from 5:45s to 8:30s quickly, finishing in 2:47. I was humbled, but learned my lesson. I came back and ran my 2:30:30 PR with a negative split in the SGM 11 months later. Now, I hope I can put some good training together over the next 2 or 3 years and improve on my PR.

Met Loren at 5:15 AM. We did our first quality run together in quite a while. It was a short one to get back into the groove of tempo work. We did a good warm up followed by 3 laps at Fort Ethan Allen. I planned on running around 6:40, but ended up running the first mile in 6:16, too quick. So, I backed off a touch and ended up running closer to my 10K pace rather than my intended 1/2 marathon pace. Even though I felt like I was working hard, my HR remained in the 150s; a good sign that my fitness is improving. I'll find a small 10k race in the next few weeks to evaluate my fitness level. I'm hoping for under 39 minutes.

| It was a little chilly this morning, 44 degrees. I was under dressed for the run. I should've at least worn gloves. I could hardly tear the top off my gu pouch. This was another solid long run. I started to run out of gas around 15 miles again. I didn't slow down and my HR was steady. It just took more effort to keep going. Lost Nation Road and Indian Brook Road plus a bit. 18.17 miles. 2:16:25. 7:30/mi. 142 BPM.

| Today was an odd running day. First of all, I overslept and missed my morning run. Then, I didn't have much gumption to get out the door from work to go run. I finally changed into my running gear around 2:00. I was heading out the door when a co-worker started bragging about how he could beat me in a 5k even though he doesn't run much. To his credit, Kyle is pretty quick for a non-runner. He's got youth on his side, he's only 25. He was also pretty good when he ran cross country in high school. So... I told him to put his money where his mouth was. I was a little tired from yesterday's 18 miler, but wanted to nip Kyle's banter in the bud immediately. Kyle and I went to the track and duked it out, sort of. I beat him by about 10 seconds. I ran 17:29 for 3 miles. I'm still impressed that the kid ran under 18 minutes while his exercise routine consists of jogging on the treadmill once a week and playing basketball. On the flip side, my 17:29 for 3 miles is a good performance indicator for me. I'm making good progress. The next test will be pacing Loren in the Vermont Marathon 2 weeks from now. We'll see how many 6:30s I can run in a row.... |

| Flew to Jacksonville, FL today. My flights were delayed and I arrived in the afternoon. I decided to take the day off. On a non-running note, I flew on a Colgan Air Dash-8. This is the airline and airplane that crashed in Buffalo last winter. I had purchased the tickets well in advance and forgot about it. To add a little extra drama, I just read on CNN that a wheel fell off during landing on ANOTHER Colgan Air Dash-8 on Thursday. I might ask for a copy of the preflight checklist before I get on my flight home! It's concrete jungle around the hotel, but I should be able to get a few miles in this week. |

| The good news is that my friend PR'd in the marathon. He ran 2:49. The bad news is that my right calf tightened up 3 miles into the run. I jogged a bit to warm up and waited for Loren at the 13 mile mark. I did not time it well. I ended up standing around for 10 to 15 minutes by the time he hit 13 miles. When he came by, I jumped into 6:20's with him. It was too much for cold muscles, especially after taking 3 or 4 days off. I'll end up taking a few more days off to nurse my calf. Another dumb mistake on my part. It's tough enough to get out the door every day and stay healthy. I'm pretty upset at myself for taking such a risk running hard on cold legs in rainy 40 degree weather. I hope my calf heals quickly so I can get back on the roads. |

I'm considering consulting with my doctor about these frequent calf muscle injuries. They are not career-ending, but they are bad enough to sideline me for a few weeks. |

There is no flat terrain in Bisbee, AZ! I ran 4.9 miles up and 4.9 miles down. I have to confess that a portion of the uphill was actually hands-on-my-knees walking. The road was Juniper Flats Road. It is not flat at all! I didn't set waypoints, but according to Google, the crest is about 7000ft. Bisbee is around 5200ft. Not a bad climb; I'm not as good on hills as I used to be. 9.80 miles. 1:21:37. 8:20/mi. 142 BPM.
Anne and I went for a 7 mile hike climbing 2000 ft at Coronado National Monument. It was beautiful! I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow. |

| Lost Nation Road to Indian Brook Road. This was my first long run in a while. I've had a tough time staying consistant recently. I need a couplr good months worth of training followed by a positive race result to get me over this funk. It's easy to forget how hard you worked in the past. The run felt good through the first hour. I ran out of gas at 10 miles and endured the last few miles. On a positive note, even when I felt like I was shuffling, I was moving along at 7:30s. 14.71 miles. 1:49:51. 7:29/mi. 153 BPM. |

| Early morning Essex loop with Loren. We were both pretty pooped. Neither of us spoke much during the run. It sorta reminded me of "back in the day" when I was training hard with my old buddy Darryl Wagner. We ran quite a few miles together in silence. I like running with someone, but do not like gabbing on the run. Does that make sense? 8.00 miles. 1:01:48. 7:43/mi. 132BPM. |

| The workout was going to be 6 x 800 @ 2:45 - 2:50. It went fairly well until #5 (2:48, 2:50, 2:50, 2:51, 2:51). I pulled up with another calf strain. This time it was my right calf. Enough is enough. I'm going to see a physical therapist to get some insight.

| I attempted an easy 5 miler. Three miles into the run my calf tightened up, so I walked the final 2 miles back to work. I met with a physical therapist today. His opinion is that I have some muscle imbalances from tight hamstrings and hip flexors. This is causing my pelvis to tilt putting extra strain on my calf muscles, among other things. I'm taking the week off to let the calf heal and then start back slowly incorporating the PT exercises. |

| PT appointment. I got an ultrasound treatment and a massage on my right calf. Joel, my PT showed me a bunch of dynamic stretches/exercises to do after an easy mile of running before my regular running workout. It should only add a few extra minutes to my routine. In addition, I'll do static stretches a couple times a day. Hopefully I'll see some progress in a few weeks. I've run out of patience trying to get through these nagging injuries on my own.
