Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Tried to run a couple miles but only made it to 0.5 before the hip felt bad. Headed to the gym for 15 minutes on the recumbent bike and yoga. Doc appt tomorrow to get some steroids! :)

PM - Strength training 30 minutes.

Lauren Fleshman really hit home with her recent post -

I needed my trusted therapist of 16 years: The Run. Running is so much more to me than a job or a way to test my potential. Running is “move, sweat, process, move on.” With running I’ve set goals, won championships, flushed out ideas for writing, started two businesses, developed friendships, grown up. My run is meditation, prayer, therapy, and source of pleasure and pain. Problem was, just like the previous 43 days I needed my “therapist”, I remembered for the ONE THOUSANTH TIME she was unavailable due to injury.  The injured runner is like a recent amputee victim, continually forgetting that the limb isn’t there, crestfallen at each realization. What we need more than anything is a suitable prosthetic and an attitude adjustment.

This is great Andrea. I can 100% relate to everything she says and it is a good reminder to me to never take the simple act of running for granted.

Wishing you all the best at the Doc tomorrow and I have to say that you are being such a good sport through this all. You are a great example!

Andrea, you really have been so great during all of this, I am so sorry that you can't run right now! I forget how much I need to run for so many reasons until I can't anymore!! Good luck tomorrow at the DR. I'm pulling for you!!

OH MY, I have been a blogging slacker. I am sorry, I did not know you were injured. I wondered why you were not racing at TOU when I saw you for a brief second...dang!

Love that quote. Thanks for the reminder that we all often need. Running is a blessing that I take for granted every day. In fact, I curse it often. But when it gets taken away, it is like I have lost a piece of me.

Good luck at the Doctor. I am going to now go back and read what on earth happened since I am clueless.

Thanks! I'm trying my best, but it's really hard when you rely on it for mental sanity.

Kelli - this started as what felt like an irritated hip flexor muscle...I decided to take time off and the injury has only gotten worse since then. Now I have pain in my glutes, hip, and hamstring...it's spreading everywhere! So aa couple people have recommended going on prednisone, a corticosteroid that is a super anti-inflammatory. Hoping that will do the trick to promote healing...

I still hold to my theory that the problem is a hip parasite that can only be killed by chugging 2 liters of Diet Dew in under 2 minutes!

From Andrea on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 16:00:57 from 72.37.171.52

Maybe I need to stop eating so much so the parasite doesn't get any bigger!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 16:47:38 from 67.172.235.55

Mountain Dew is the cure all, I am sure. It definitely sounds like a parasite.

Sorry to hear about this annoying injury. I hope the prednisone starts the healing process pronto.

please invite me to the parasite-killing party, if it comes to that.

i think the steroids are a good idea. hopefully it does the trick.

From JulieC on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 17:17:59 from 67.41.190.1

hang in there. I will let you know how the injection in my back helps my "hamstring" problem. I would definitely not do oral steroids. They miss with your ENTIRE body. I was out of whack for while with them. What about a similar problem like Nan had? a tare in the hip I think. SI JOINT tightening the hip and hamstring? who knows. we are delicate running creatures!!!

From JulieC on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 17:20:08 from 67.41.190.1

oh so I asked my pain dr. today after the procedure....so can I run tomorrow? ( didn't mention the marathon Saturday as a pacer). His reply with a puzzled look "if you want to". You could tell he was like "if that is what floats your boat" and YES RUNNING FLOATS my boat. It is MY SURVIVAL METHOD. GIVE ME BACK MY LEFT LEG ALREADY!!!!!!!

From NatalieK on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 18:02:49 from 24.2.101.184

Oh my, I am sorry. Especially for someone as talented as you. I also am familiar with that therapist, the run. I hope you two get reacquainted (you have no idea how many times I had to spell that word out!) real soon!
