Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - 2.2 miles with Jake. Then I did gait analysis at physcial therapy (ran at least 1.3 miles during this at 7 min pace). Results - not good. I'll post pictures/video when I get it. The jist of it is -

1) upper body is too upright, need to lean forward more
2) lots of pelvic movement when I'm running especially with the right side, need to work on the gluteus medius muscle
3) not enough hip extension, need to work on hip flexibility
4) knee moves valgus on impact probably related with the overactive hamstring and gluteus medius, need to roll out hamstrings

It all makes sense, but it's kind of depressing. I still have a long way to go. I probably shouldn't be running much right now while I'm working on improving form...I might try doing more cycling and uphill walking. I have to get these problems fixed or I'll stay in this injury cycle forever so I'm glad I have some direction on what needs to change. This approach is going to work, I have a feeling :)

PM - 20 minutes walking at 8% 4.0mph.

Form change is a difficult thing to do. I've had the analysis done and I was grateful for the outcome, but getting there is tough.

I hope this will make your lent sacrifice successful!

That's more like it. It sounds as though you may have got to the root of the problem. You'll be able to work with some focus now. Stay positive.

From Jake K on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 11:58:30 from 155.100.226.191

This is actually good news. I'm glad you decided to go and get this done. Big progress over the last 2 months, but obviously something still isn't quite clicking. Now you have a good idea of what to specifically focus on to get back to 100%.

From Lulu Walls on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 12:08:27 from 155.100.9.11

I think this is exciting! It is probably overwhelming to hear all those things, but it sounds like it gave you a lot of direction for what you need to work on. I think this is it! You are on the up and ups for sure.

p.s. I can't wait to meet your puppy!

From Redd on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 12:21:55 from 67.182.221.190

More progress, treat yo self to a bucket of ice cream tonight!

I'm so glad you are cracking the case! Has your form changed since you became injured or did your form cause the injury? In any case, it sounds like you will be back in full force once you conquer this.

From Andrea on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 12:43:08 from 72.37.171.52

Melody - Probably some of both. My form is definitely A LOT worse right now than it was before and I think the injury exacerbated any imbalances I had. Taking months off from running and then starting running back while still in a compromised form - can't have helped. But I had to start from somewhere and that's just part of injuring such a crucial muscle for pelvic stability. Retraining and strengthening is key - and finding a therapist that knows what they are doing.

It's going to take a while but that's okay...this year is my rebuilding year and then 2014 is my comeback year. I'll get there as long as I don't let myself give up!

From Kassi on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 14:31:13 from 98.202.223.143

Lots of good info! And lots to work on that will get you where you need to go. Maybe everyone needs a gait analysis. I hope things come together sooner than later in the year. But you will be a power house next year!

From Matt Poulsen on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 18:09:45 from 98.202.242.213

Good information. Time to get rid of this injury forever!

From Jason D on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 18:35:49 from 24.1.80.94

You have enviable determination, Andrea. I was going to raise the same question as Melody. It's amazing to see even great runners who have issues with hip extension and weakish glutes (a cross-over gait is usually a good sign). These are aspects you can work on. You have an amazing attitude.

The forward lean is tough because you don't want the back to round or bend at the waist. I spend a lot of time thinking about form and it can drive you crazy. Oh, the number of times I have changed my arm carriage!

You will come back stronger than you were for sure.

From Neasts on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 18:51:14 from 71.213.42.178

I am envious, actually. Like Kassi says, probably everyone needs a gait analysis. Back in the day my coaches would tell me I had good form, but years, babies, injuries, etc., have all taken their toll. Once in a while I'll see a picture of me running and I'm just amazed at how out-of-whack parts of me have gotten. I will be so interested to see how your improvements develop.

From Matt Schreiber on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 21:50:38 from 66.17.102.185

You seem very optimistic that you're headed in the right direction. Seems very logical to fix this stuff now. Good luck! and keep at it!
