Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

I felt pretty good this morning so I decided to run in the morning instead of the afternoon. 2.5 miles in 21 minutes. Only a little incision area discomfort, no compensation pain. I am 9 weeks post-op today. I am guessing that I need about three more weeks to really feel good all the time.I still have a pretty significant bump around the incision areas that haven't gone away yet. Any suggestions to promote healing?

Great article and video about Gary Player, 77-year old and was in the ESPN body issue. He is still going strong and has some great things to say -

“America is maybe the most unhealthy nation in the world because they live on crap,” Player said. “They’ve got the best food in the world, the best farmers and the best food but they live on crap. When [British chef] Jamie Oliver went to America he went to areas where children never had cabbage or broccoli or spinach or vegetables in their life. People giving their children a soft drink and a doughnut to go to school. No wonder academically they’re affected.”

“Most of my friends are dead and I’m going on to 78. I’m so fit and strong. I could get a heart attack, that can happen in life. But dam it all man, I get up in the morning at six o’clock. I work on my ranch. I mix cement. This morning, I stood there with a guy, we’re doing a new land. For three hours I helped pick up rocks. Now I’m in such great shape. I climb a mountain, I swim in my pool. I walk and I exercise. I don’t ask anyone on my ranch to do anything that I wouldn’t do. You got to keep your body moving, moving, moving.”

Massage the scar area daily! I used Burt's Bees Res-Q ointment after my arm surgeries and I can barely see the scar and the skin is all smooth. I never did it on my hip scars and they look like crap!

Oh and nice running - yay!

I agree with Amiee - massage and scrape your scar to break up the connective tissue. My CSec incision hurt up to 5-6 months out, no joke. It was usually random shooting pains, but it eventually went away.

From Andrea on Wed, Jul 10, 2013 at 09:50:35 from 72.37.171.52

Scrape the scar?! That sounds terrible. It's bad enough just having to touch it...I'll try though :)

From Rachelle on Wed, Jul 10, 2013 at 09:54:15 from 199.190.170.30

Scraping isn't so bad if you let someone else do it and don't watch. :)

Great running Andrea!

Scraping sounds horrible! I would stick to massage. Wearing steri-strips helps too. I have a stack of them at my desk if you need any :)

Put an e-stim machine on it? Promotes blood flow/muscle metabolism.

Thanks for sharing. BTW, read yesterday that Mexico has just surpassed the US as the most obese nation (32.8 vs 31.8). "We're #2...we're #2!!" [chant]

Keep..."moving, moving, moving." Love that.

Boy, that is a great article. I'm sending that to every older person I know.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Jul 10, 2013 at 13:07:12 from 24.10.249.165

You haven't sent it to me yet Jake. That's probably because nobody would think of me as "older" right?

Seriously, that whole article is great. So much of what we take for aging is really associated tithe inactivity and poor diet. Thanks for posting Andrea.

Seriously the human body was designed to work hard! Yay for running this morning!!

I agree with what others have said -- massage the scars (using lotion and your fingers). That is exactly what I have my patients do after I do their knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgeries (after the wounds have healed appropriately). It works well. Patients especially like Mederma or Corn-Huskers lotions. If you start to get wound breakdown, then stop (and wait until the wound matures more). But, at 9 weeks out, I'm guessing you'll be fine.

Great quote, by the way!

From Jackie82 on Wed, Jul 10, 2013 at 16:22:21 from 67.186.135.246

Back in the day I tried cocoa butter with Vitamin E daily on an incision and it healed pretty well. That was before Mederma. Interesting fact: onion extract is the active ingredient in Mederma, so maybe you can just mix in some onion and cocoa butter just don't go run in the heat or you might start smelling like sauteed onions. ;)

Great running! You sure are progressing!

Amen! I also like your plan:)

From runningafterbabies on Wed, Jul 10, 2013 at 22:31:25 from 174.52.130.66

By scraping I don't mean aggressive digging...just lightly breaking up that crunchy tissue should do the trick. I agree with Dr. P all points. It's nice to have a resident expert.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jul 11, 2013 at 15:47:17 from 12.132.197.125

I've always liked Gary Player (I used to be a golf fanatic) but I could've done without seeing him naked.

Really glad to see you running again.
