Running Accomplishments:

I was a much better runner in my 20's and 30's.  When I was 52 I had a 28.5 5K and a 58.5 10K, and I would like to surpass those times.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run a 1/2 marathon.  I would actually love to run a full marathon, but am not sure if my body would break down with injuries training for one.  Update fall 2010: still no 1/2 marathon, but I did run all the way up city creek and back home (14 miles)  - absolutely gorgeous!!

Personal:

My name is Adele Kimbrough - I'm 58 and have been running (off and on) since I was 16.  My body is not well designed for speed, and I'm a bit arthritic, but I'm having fun trying to figure out just how fast I can be.  And this blog helps!

2011 Deseret News 10K Finish Line.
Dang - missed my goal by 4 seconds!

Tempo run: Warmup mile (5 mph @ 4%).  Then 5 miles where I adjusted the speed each mile: 6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.1, 6 mph. (TM @ 1.5).   1/4 mile cool down, then off to take the kids to the dentist.  No time for stretching :(

This is the run that almost wasn't!  I couldn't figure out why my "easy" warm up mile felt soooo  sluggish, and really didn't feel like progressing into the tempo workout I had planned.  Finally I looked at the display after my first mile and saw that my daughter had set the incline to 4%!!  Ah ha!  Setting it back to 1.5% instantly felt much much better, and I finished my run as planned - except for a quick water break, a longer pit stop, and a quick phone call.  (I hate looking at all the green and red led lights on the display, so I normally keep the display covered with a piece of cardboard such that only the distance and speed settings show.  I guess I should check the settings before I start running!!

4%???? You will now be known as SUPERWOMAN in my book! Holy cow, I would have been crying and quit after about 2 minutes.

SO many people cover the displays on the treadmill, but I can not do it. I have to see every 100th of a mile go by or I go crazy!

And I loved your workout. I do the same thing---up .1 each mile. You barely notice you are going faster!

LOL funny! I'm a wimp and my inner incline sensor would have immediately told me there was a problem! That's one system shocking warm up though!

Nice workout! I like the incremental increases in speed too. It makes a treadmill a little more bearable.

And I'm with Kelli--I'm a display watcher. I can't cover it. I have to know EXACTLY how much more I have left :)

Kelli - Superdumb might be a more apt description!! Can't believe it took me a mile to figure it out.

April - yeah, I finally looked down and thought "gee it looks like I'm on an incline". Superdumbdumb, but hey I got a good workout! :)

Tracy - I decided to try the incremental speeds today because I've been noticing other bloggers doing it!

I was an outside runner for over 35 years, and I mostly cover the display because it just really bugs me to see all those lights in front of me!! I'd much much rather see pavement/trails/people/cars/nature instead of all those lights! :)

Hope you're all feeling better, and that your families and friends are doing better as well!

Goodness, are we all sick????

I prefer outside, too. Now that I think of it, my home treadmill has way too many lights, it bugged me. But the ones at the gym are not too bad. I do so almost everyone cover their displays with towels or magazines, so I think those of us who don't are the ODD ones!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 23:15:46 from 24.8.167.243

Well, you're stronger now for running that mile at 4%, even if you didn't mean to!

I don't cover up the display but I play games with myself, like I won't let myself look at it until a song ends, or something like that.

From Kelli on Fri, Apr 09, 2010 at 00:19:42 from 71.219.92.128

Carolyn, I do the same thing (until the song ends, until the next commercial, until that guy does 50 squats, whatever) BUT I never wait. I always cheat and look.

From CookieLegs on Fri, Apr 09, 2010 at 01:27:52 from 71.36.82.238

Thanks for the idea - I've never used a towel! I use a note pad and just slide it over once in a while to see what's going on. I'm like Carolyn - I try to hold off looking for as long as possible. Then when I do look, I either get a pleasant surprise :), or a disheartening feeling of "when will this darn boring treadmill run ever be over"!!!

Dang, I have NEVER been p[pleasantly surprised.
