Running Accomplishments:

I was a much better runner in my 20's and 30's.  When I was 52 I had a 28.5 5K and a 58.5 10K, and I would like to surpass those times.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run a 1/2 marathon.  I would actually love to run a full marathon, but am not sure if my body would break down with injuries training for one.  Update fall 2010: still no 1/2 marathon, but I did run all the way up city creek and back home (14 miles)  - absolutely gorgeous!!

Personal:

My name is Adele Kimbrough - I'm 58 and have been running (off and on) since I was 16.  My body is not well designed for speed, and I'm a bit arthritic, but I'm having fun trying to figure out just how fast I can be.  And this blog helps!

2011 Deseret News 10K Finish Line.
Dang - missed my goal by 4 seconds!

Good run this morning to and from the capital building turnaround.  Was able to pick up the downhill pace better without feeling the sciatica pain, and ran at a good tempo pace for part of the run.  Benchmark time 48:49 (21:40 downhill to turnaround, 28:09 uphill coming home). Ran against a pretty stiff wind the last 1/2 mile.

Feeling small twinges of sciatica pain in glute while not running.  It is not severe, but I'm just aware of it being present.

I can't decide whether I prefer a run that is downhill the first half and uphill the second half, or a run that is uphill the first half and downhill the second half. How did you like finishing uphill?

Hi Carolyn, I'm not sure what I prefer either. But, because of where I live, most of my loop runs do start downhill and end uphill. Since I know the uphill is coming I can usually deal with it. I have a long stretch of moderate uphill, a steep uphill block, and then have to finish with 1/2 mile of very gradual uphill. I don't mind pushing hard on the moderate and steep uphill portions, but really seem to run out of gas on the last 1/2 mile... Especially when it's windy! I'm guessing you have similarly hilly runs where you live.

It's funny, about 5 years ago I only ran on flat streets, or at the flat soccer track, because I didn't think I could run hills. Then one day I ran a hilly loop near my house, and realized hey, I can do this!!

Nice run! I used to fear hills but the more I run on them the more I like them--they really break up the monotony and let different muscles in your legs get used so sometimes are not as fatiguing as a flat run.
