I started this run hoping to run 11 miles between 7:00 and 7:30 per mile. After five miles, I was losing steam quickly due to dehydration. It was 75 degrees with high humidity, which made for a tough run. I knew I was dehydrated but didn't have access to water, so I just had to suffer through the last 5-6 miles. Ended up at 8:00/mile.

I learned the valuable lesson that when it's hot with high humidity to go out at a slower pace (and to drink as much as I can before I start my run)

Planned day off. I feel pretty lethargic from yesterday's tough run, but I should be feeling better tomorrow. I can't believe how much the heat/humidity takes out of me during longer runs.

5 miles recovery. 8:27/mile. A nice, relaxing run that didn't take much out of me.

Lactate threshold run. I did a 1.5 mile warmup, then did a 6.2 mile LT run. I averaged 6:33/mile which was a confidence booster. I was running around 90-95% effort, so I could have pushed it a little more, but didn't want to run all out. I am very happy with 6:33/mile. The goal is to push my tempo pace down to the low 6s this summer. This was a very enjoyable run.

I'm planning on doing a 5 mile recovery tomorrow and a 17 mile long run on Saturday

5 mile easy run. I got the second COVID-19 shot yesterday, and I had chills and was sweating all night, so I got a terrible night's sleep. My arm is sore, I have a headache, and my muscles ache. Hopefully the side effects will subside before my long run tomorrow. I could have easily skipped today's run but didn't want to do that.

17 mile long run. It was around 60 degrees. I started with the intent to run 7:30/mile the whole run instead of starting slow and speeding up throughout the run like I usually do. It ended up working well, but I was pushing too hard the last few miles for a long run. I drank two 500ml water bottles during the run and ate a pack of Honey Stinger chews during mile 10. I was still pretty dehydrated after the run.

I didn't feel 100% due to lingering side effects from my second COVID shot, but overall it was a good run. Since high school, the only time I can remember being in better shape than this was when I trained for the Pocatello marathon, which was in August 2013. I'm feeling great and hope to be able to stay consistent. I need to sign up for a race to keep me motivated.
